Peter asked: How do I clean a vinyl bench? This bench was stored in an enclosed porch with a cloth cover over it. When I took off the cover, there was a sticky substance all over the vinyl that won’t come off with soap and water. What will take it off? Thank you.

Vinyl is a popular material for many different types of products, but over time can tend to “ooze” an oily, sticky substance on the surface. Sometimes this sticky residue can be cleaned away with a simple cleaner and other times requires drying out the sticky substance first. [links]

Wet the vinyl; sprinkle on some baking soda and rub it around with a cloth, and then rinse with clear water. You can also remove scuff marks, as well as dye stains, by rubbing with denatured alcohol. After washing your hard vinyl chairs, protect them and keep them shiny by coating them with automobile paste. [links]

One of the problems with mopping a vinyl floor is that the water, soap, and vinyl work to create a sticky residue. [links]

Use caution when using bleach on the seats. The bleach will react with the thread and cause new problems. I was going to suggest Mr. Clean Magic Eraser but held back for the same reason. That is not to say not to use either. Make sure you wash it down thoroughly after with mild soap and water.

Moving forward, try some 303? Aerospace Protectant on those vinyl seats. It will help keep them looking new and lasting longer with the primary function of protecting surfaces from UV rays. That formula will not leave a greasy or oily residue like other protectants will. Check out more info on those products below, if you're interested. more

Vinyl is a material used frequently in and around homes. This material is versatile, low maintenance, and easy to clean. It is affordable, recyclable, and energy efficient. Kitchen floors, siding, windows, doors and furnishings are just a few household items that are commonly made of vinyl. Although it is easy to take care of, if vinyl gets sticky from chewing gum, adhesive, children's fingers or even cleaning products, there are special steps that should be taken to clean it.

Wipe vinyl siding, seats or other vinyl surfaces with a cloth saturated in pure white vinegar. If the vinegar does not remove the sticky residue, dab a little lubricating oil, such as WD-40, onto the area and wipe it clean. [links]

Allow the salt to dry into a crust. This may take up to 1 hour, depending on the humidity. more
