6. Thread the jamb nut on and snug it with your fingers. If you removed the frame on a single mantle lantern, reinstall it now. Tighten the jamb nut with the appropriate wrench.

2. Appliances made from about 1947 to 1953 can have an alpha-numeric code on the fount bottom. The number indicates the year of manufacture while the letter, most assume, is the first (A) or second (B) half of the year. I do not believe anyone is 100% certain what the letters mean, but most accept “A” indicating January thru June and “B” indicating July thru December. more

1. Lanterns and stoves made from about 1951 to present are usually stamped on the bottom of the fount. You will see two sets of numbers; the number on the left is the month and the one on the right is the year of manufacture.

Dating a ColemanĀ® lamp, lantern or stove is usually very easy. Most ColemanĀ® lamps and lanterns manufactured in the United States after 1925 or so have a manufacturing date stamped on them, and it is usually on the bottom or the side of the fount. Most Coleman® 2 and 3 burner stoves have manufacturing stamps on them starting in the early 1960s, while single burner stoves were dated from their introduction in the early 1940s.

Here are a few things to look at (and for) when trying to decide if it's worth the time and money:

Inspect the fount/tank closely . Look for discolored spotting or signs of moisture that should not be there. Very old founts can crack, and you can see this if you look very closely. Old lanterns and lamps by other manufacturers are famous for this. Look for bubbling under the paint or plating as it often means advanced rust. Stove tanks sometimes leak around the seam. [links]

Turn everything . When you are inspecting an appliance, turn every knob and lever you can find to make sure nothing has seized up. “Everything” generally means the fuel valve wheel, the tip cleaner stem/lighting lever and the pump. here

Use a toothbrush to scrub the inside of the cylinder until it feels smooth. Hold the fount upside-down and spray the cleaner up inside to rinse the grime out.
Open a can of automotive rubbing compound and spray in some cleaner to soften it up ( Figure 10 ). Rubbing compound is very abrasive so use it sparingly until you can see how it is working. more

2.4 Clean the fuel & air tube . Remove the fuel and air tube, spring and metering rod from the vinegar bath. Rinse in water and place them on a cloth. Hold the tube with one hand and spray carburetor cleaner into the large end ( Figure 7 ). Take the metering rod and insert it backwards, up from the bottom of the tube ( Figure 8 ). Move it in and out numerous times to dislodge any varnish inside the tube. Remove the rod and re-spray inside the tube. Repeat this process a few times to ensure it is clean. [links]

2.7 Clean the frame . Take note of what the outside-bottom of your frame looks like. It will match your frame rest.

2.8 Clean the fuel filler cap. The original cap should match your fount, either plated or painted. Clean the cap (and screw if applicable) as you did the fount. I recommend you always use a new fuel filler cap when operating any stove or lantern. If you would like instructions on how to remove and replace the filler cap gasket please click here.
