I knew Id seen it somewhere. Now found it See the Footnote to the Yamaha codes explanation on the iBoats website:-
I did have an original dealer list but it disapeared when the engine went.
Maybe they have different codes for different models?

Your Johnson outboard model number can usually be found on the nameplate located on the motor or the mounting bracket. The nameplate should contain a model number and a serial number. The model number will identify the year and certain details of that motor. more

In 1967, the president of Yamaha Motor, Genichi Kawakami, had a meeting with Pakistan's Ambassador to Japan. The Ambassador told president Kawakami that during Pakistan's rainy season the roads become severely flooded. President Kawakami told the Ambassador that Yamaha has outboard motors and the company would be pleased if those outboards might be of some help. That was the start of Yamaha's venture into the overseas marine outboard motor market.
