2. Fuel Pump Method
There is a cut marking on both fuel pump body and plunger of the fuel pump. when these marking matches ; fuel injection takes place. At this point, piston ignition starts . This will be 4-6 degree before TDC and the inlet and exhaust valves are closed.
L.S,
What a lot - most very complicated possibilities - to find the TDC of a piston in an engine?
Just look at the marks on the flywheel
Regards
Alfons
Thanks for reading.. complicated but in some extend it is useful. Wt will you do if the markings are not clear. here
A more accurate way to locate (TDC) is by using a piston stop tool. Screw the tool into the #1 spark plug hole by hand; and then slowly rotate the crankshaft by hand until the piston come up against the stop. [links]
Mark your balancer again. Measure the distance between the two marks and divide by two. As a result, This is your (TDC).
So, if you’re relatively new to engine work and have ever pulled, or need to pull; the distributor or damper from your engine; finding Top Dead Center (TDC) on piston #1 becomes an instant priority. Finding Top Dead Center (TDC) is an essential skill for assembling and tuning engines; and is even a necessity for performing some engine diagnostic tests, such as a cylinder leak down test. [links]
As a general reference point, or when installing a distributor; Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke is required.
Mark your balancer with a marker, and then slowly rotate the crankshaft by hand in the opposite direction; until you come up against the stop again. [links]
To determine the location of the number one cylinder:
On a V type engine , one cylinder head is slightly forward of the other; toward the front of the engine. Cylinder number one is the forward most cylinder in that bank.
On an inline engine , the number one cylinder is located at the front of the engine; closest to the timing cover. [links]
I'm supposed to find .462 BTDC using a dial indicator and set the timing pointer to a mark on the flywheel at .462 BTDC.
So, is .462 BTDC now considered TDC?
I'm reading conflicting information in 2 different manuals.
I can't figure out how to set the timing.
MAtkins, I have never heard of setting the timing as Wired has specified. Merc is pretty specific about idle pickup timing. Idle pickup is when the carbs first open. Adjusting the idle stop screw will change the idle timing, but not the idle pickup timing.
Re: help identify TDC on flywheel's power of tower. more
Are you getting 800rpm in the lake or with muffs. It will idle higher with muffs because there is no back pressure from the lake. 800rpm at idle is good. When you are setting it up you want it to idle around 600 rpm while idling in forward in gear. So when you come out of gear it will rise to around 800. [links]
