Remove the propeller nut with an adjustable wrench or pliers, whichever works best. here

Replace the propeller and push it onto the driveshaft, lining the pin up with the recess that it will fit into. Turn the propeller on the driveshaft while pushing it onto the shear pin. The turning motion will come to an abrupt halt when it is seated correctly.

Pull the propeller off once the nut has been removed. Take note of the hole in the driveshaft that is roughly 3/4s of the way up. This is where the shear pin is installed and replaced. If the shear pin has broken off inside of the hole, push on it firmly until it falls out. [links]

An Evinrude outboard motor uses a shear pin to protect the propeller from accidental impact. The shear pin will break off when the propeller hits something underwater, such as a rock, tree stump, or other large or heavy object, allowing the driveshaft to keep turning while disengaging the propeller. Shear pins are designed to be readily changed, even out on the water, with either simple tools or no tools at all.

Hello, Pannet.

Is it the vertical fin or a horizontal fin that is broken?

If it is the vertical fin (called "skeg") it can be repaired by installing a stainless steel sleeve called a "SkegGard". SkegGards are available from Cabelas online.

The horizontal fin can be welded if the weld is not too close to the gearcase (should be over 1" from gearcase) without dismantling. Wrap the gearcase with wet cloths and keep them wet while welding.

If the weld must be close to the gearcase, dismantle it and remove the seals first.

Good Luck!

Red sky at night. . .
JB

Take it to a prop shop they weld them everyday.

The proper fix is to pull the lower unit, 'n weld on a new one. more

There are bolt-on, 'n epoxy on replacements, though that one maybe to short for a bolt-on.

I would weld a new one on. Clean it up, fab fit a replacement. Pack on the heat block to keep the gearbox coolish. Any propeller shop can do it fast. I have a welding shop and would have no issue, but I've also spent some time wrenching on drives so know what the risks are to the seals if I let them get hot. A good welding shop can do this in a short period of time if they understand and handle properly the risks.

You can run it that way. No problem. except touching down with your prop. That skeg keeps the prop from dragging, in the wet or on the trailer. Get it fixed as soon as you can. Weld on! more

I had a buddy that had one welded on and then he put on a stainless skeg guard.

and to those that say a bent skeg won't hurt anything. go and turn your trim tab hard to one side or the other and see how this effects your performance. [links]

I believe (which doesn't mean it's correct) they are there to help protect the propeller. here
