Flushing outboard motors seems to be a good thing, depending on the water where you fish. Fresh water fishermen are pretty lucky, but saltwater fishermen, if they don't flush the motor soon after usage may encounter long term problems of salt buildup. Also having the ability to run a motor without taking the boat to the lake is a plus, especially if you have done some repair work on it and need to see if your efforts were a success or tune the carburetor. Or as I do, after any extended period of not being on the water, the evening before new fishing trip, which has saved the day numerous times.

OMC made after 1993 have a flush plug on the side of the water jacket as shown on the 1994 9.9hp motor. Removing this plug screw allows you to use the above flush adapter. Yamaha also for many years used this same system using the same adapter. here

As with anything mechanical, there is a certain amount of maintenance that you are going to need to complete to keep your outboard motor functioning at its peak. And there is usually a right way to do things and a wrong way. So you want to be sure to learn the proper technique. In the case of flushing an outboard motor, such as when you are completing your winterize boat checklist, you will want to spend the time to make sure that you are doing the process correctly. Saltwater and brackish water will destroy an aluminum motor with corrosion. Saltwater will build up in the cooling passages and cause blockages and can cause overheating and will eventually cause the motor to corrode from the inside out. more

Once you have completed the flush on your outboard motor you will want to be certain that it is completely drained before you store it for the winter. At the same time it is a good idea to visually inspect all of the moving joints, connections and parts of your boat. You will want to look for damage or cracks that could worsen over the winter and cause you to miss that first great day of boating in the spring. Hinges, pull switches, latches, and linkages should get a good coat of lubricant as well to ensure that they weather well. Also inspect all of the fittings and hoses to be sure that there are no signs of wear. It is much easier to order parts online to have for the spring or to plan a day to replace worn parts during the fall or winter. [links]

Flushing bags are soft sided and made of very heavy plastic or vinyl. They have a frame that supports them. With the propeller removed, they are designed to be fitted up around the lower end of the engine and completely enclose it. A garden hose attaches to the bag to keep the water full and flowing. Then the engine is started and the process works much like that of using the muffs. The bags can be found at marine stores and also online. It should be large enough to fit snuggly around the engines midsection and reach well above the intakes. [links]

For direct-injected two-stroke OptiMax outboards, Mercury recommends using a water supply with no more than 45 psi (pounds per square inch) and attaching it to the flush port on the back of the engine, beneath the cowling. Mercury doesn’t give preference to running the engine or not while flushing — three minutes is the minimum either way — but it shouldn’t exceed minimum idle speed if it’s running. more

On every model except the DF2.5 portable, there is a built-in freshwater flushing system port in front just under the cowling, and on select other models, there’s another on the port side halfway between the cavitation plate and cowling. The latter has a screw-on cap that needs no tools to remove. Just unscrew it and attach an optional fitting that accepts a garden hose. When using these ports, attach a garden hose and do not run the engine. Suzuki also provides the option to use ear muffs to cover the intakes on both sides of the lower unit. Make sure it fits snugly, then turn the water on first and run the engine at idle. As with outboards of all makes, ensure that water is coming out of the “tell-tale” pilot hole, to verify it is getting proper flow. In both procedures, Suzuki recommends flushing for at least five minutes. [links]

On every current North American Yamaha model of eight hp or more, there is a flush fitting on the starboard side toward the front. And all have the same procedure, which is to hook up a garden hose and run it — with the engine off — for 15 minutes. If the boat is still in the water, tilt the outboard up while flushing. When done, tilt it down to drain. On Yamaha’s YouTube channel is a service video that demonstrates how to use a flush bag, which completely immerses the lower unit in a small pool of water, and muffs. Yamaha recommends removing the prop before proceeding with either. With both of these options, run the engine at no more than 900 rpm for 15 minutes. Always watch the motor during the entire procedure in case the muffs slide or the bag loses water. [links]

Flushing an outboard engine is not a one-procedure-fits-all thing. To do it right for your particular model, look it up in the owner’s manual.

The hour counter on certain Honda outboard motors counts the number of operating hours since the last time periodic maintenance was performed and the hour counter was reset.
