Does Febreze remove odors or merely mask them? Here's the chemistry behind how Febreze works, including information about its active ingredient, cyclodextrin, and how the product interacts with odors.

Febreze was invented by Procter & Gamble and introduced in 1996. The active ingredient in Febreze is beta-cyclodextrin, a carbohydrate. Beta-cyclodextrin is an 8-sugar ringed molecule that is formed via enzymatic conversion of starch, usually from corn.

The cyclodextrin molecule resembles a doughnut. When you spray Febreze, the water in the product partially dissolves the odor, allowing it to form a complex inside the "hole" of the cyclodextrin doughnut shape. The stink molecule is still there, but it can't bind to your odor receptors, so you can't smell it. Depending on the type of Febreze you're using, the odor might simply be deactivated or it might be replaced with something nice-smelling, such as a fruity or floral fragrance.

Sometimes, the odor clings to the surfaces on and in the cabinets. Completely wipe down the cabinets with a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar on a slightly damp sponge or lint-free cloth. The vinegar helps cut greasy residue while removing odors, says the Maid Brigade.

No matter what the source of the odor, airing out the cabinet helps remove the problem. Open the cabinet doors and drawers, and remove everything stored in the cabinet. If the smell is cooking or smoke related, such as a burnt-popcorn smell, air out the kitchen as well. Open windows and turn on a ceiling fan. Use a box fan in a window, aimed to draw air out of the room, if necessary. If the odor is musty and caused by damp conditions, place a dehumidifier in the room or turn on an air conditioner to pull excess moisture out of the air. more

Wash the cabinets inside and out with a soft cloth or sponge dipped in warm, soapy water, using a plant-based oil soap or mild dish soap as the cleaning ingredient. Keep the cloth or sponge damp, not soaking wet, then follow up with another slightly damp cloth. Dry the cabinets with a towel or allow them to air-dry with the doors and drawers open. This cleaning also helps remove any residue from spilled materials inside drawers or on cabinet shelves. here

Cleaning kitchen cabinets sometimes means removing odors left behind from cooked foods or spilled substances. Air out the cabinets, wash all cabinet surfaces and use natural odor removers to take away any lingering scents. [links]

After the cabinets have been cleaned and dried inside and out, the odor should be gone. If not, or if the odor is from dry, fairly new paint or varnish and washing is not an option, place a bowl of vinegar, baking soda or coffee beans in the cabinet and close the cabinet overnight, advises eartheasy. All of these substances remove odors.

I bought a used truck a while back and they sprayed the inside with febreze. Thought the smell would dissipate over time but it hasn’t and it has been almost half a year. Any tips on how to get the smell out? It gives me headaches. here

Try changing the cabin air filter. It's possible they saturated it.

One thing that is important for any mold, mildew or chemical smell is to introduce the object to warm, dry air. Because these odors can multiply if left in an enclosed space (especially a wet one), it is important to get it to a location where it can ventilate. This is best done outdoors on a sunny day, but can alternatively be done in a warm, dry place inside. Being exposed to dry air is important for two reasons: it cuts off the supply of moisture needed for the mildew smell to continue to increase, and it allows any existing moisture in the wood to evaporate and dry out. Leaving your wood furniture outside on a hot summer day may take care of the smell completely, or you may need to try that as a first step before trying other fixes.

In rare cases, if the finish is worn, smells may have gotten into the grains of the wood itself. In these circumstances, sanding and refinishing can be an option for getting rid of the smell, but is quite a lot of work. Staining and finishing wood come with its own odor problems, however. Polyurethane varnishes can off gas and leave an unpleasant nail polish remover smell for weeks after the work is done. more

Much of the odor will likely come from places hidden from sight, like dresser drawers. Before setting the furniture in the heat, it is also a good idea to wipe down the inside of drawers with a wet towel, dry immediately, and then allow to dry in the sun as well. If this still does not work, you can try again using a mild soapy solution when wiping down the drawers. Placing wadded up newspaper along with small cups of used coffee grounds in each drawer can also help, as both materials are known to absorb smells. Charcoal, which also absorbs odors and chemicals, can be left inside each space in the furniture for a few days.
