The tower method is best paired with an item like a Magic Carpet, as that will allow you to travel in both directions to check for them. Once you’ve uncovered the map in both directions, break your sand tower and move to the edge of where you last explored. Another benefit of using sand is that you can sit at the bottom and mine the entire tower.
However, using the bee mount to fly from a tower or another floating island can help you find another island very quickly. Some islands spawn right next to each other, so there’s a chance you’ll get lucky and fly right onto another one. more
Load the Meteor Shot into your gun of choice, aim at the sky, and fire away. Eventually, you’ll see the bullets bouncing back towards you. The cheapest way to do this is to buy the Flintlock Pistol from the Arms Dealer, but I’ve done this with a gun as slow as the Musket. A Boomstick will work too, even though it’s less accurate. Hardcore characters will become a ghost upon death, and will be completely deleted once the ghost player leaves the world. However, you can fly around with the ghost for an unlimited amount of time. here
A Floating Island contains a mass of isolated Forest land and a house-like structure. Each world will contain at least one Floating Island, up to a possible nine maximum in large worlds. here
Floating Islands and Floating Lakes are floating structures located generally well above the world's main land mass and can be found all the way up to Space. Their location makes them susceptible to Harpies in pre-Hardmode and Wyverns and Arch Wyverns in Hardmode. Being at such high altitude, players have reduced gravity when navigating them. Both are similar in size and placement, and both rest atop Cloud and Rain Cloud blocks with background Cloud Walls.

A Floating Island will usually contain a structure constructed from Sunplate Block, Disc Wall, and Glass Wall. It will always contain exactly one Skyware Chest along with other random Skyware furniture. Each Skyware Chest contains one of 3 rare items (the Fledgling Wings / Lucky Horseshoe , Starfury, or Shiny Red Balloon), has a 1/3 chance of containing a Sky Mill , and contains other typical Surface Chest loot. Unique items are chosen at random, with the restriction that all three unique items must be spawned at least once before truly random unique items spawn on any remaining Islands (if less than three islands are generated, the wings won't be spawned and if only one is generated, it will contain a Shiny Red Balloon). here

Wings are great, but you can’t get them before hardmode. The closest thing you can get to wings is the rocket boots, and those barely get you off the ground. By the time you can even craft wings, you’ve probably made it to the floating islands anyway, so this isn’t a good method for new characters.
This is made much easier by temporarily turning the music off. The impact sounds are further away, so turning music off allows you to listen for the sound effect better. here
Mine the meteor, craft Meteor Bars, then turn the bars into Meteor Shot. Earlier I said the Space Gun is a viable option too, but this is much easier and takes less time. [links]
