You will notice the fuel pump body on the 25hp carb is significantly wider than the original. This did not create clearance issues with the original throttle plate. All the powerhead part numbers and lower unit parts are the same for the various motors, which makes sense, as everything from the intake gasket on is designed for the dimensions of the 25hp. While not as drastic a HP increase as you'll find available to similarly sized Johnson motors (that can go all the way to 35hp with the right intake and carb combination) it is just as simple an upgrade - slightly easier as you don't need to re-bore or replace the intake (if you want more than 25hp the intake needs to be replaced on the Johnsons.)

Guys - you can simply swap in the carb off either a similar 25 HP XD series engine or one of the newer marathon series motors - either one will work. The powerhead parts and lower units are all the same for the 18/20/25 HP engines, I've checked plenty of serial #'s on boats.net at this point to verify there are no differences in any of the parts. The intake gasket and intake plates are all made for the 25hp size carb but used on all 3 motor sizes without an issue.

Due to the difference being so drastic, and the fact that the casting # from my carburetor (WMC-2) is not listed on the 18/20/25 XD series parts schematics I'm not sure exactly what part I had originally as I'm not the first owner of this engine. when I ordered the rebuild kit every gasket and part in it fit fine except for the idle mixture screw, which fortunately I still had the original one.

Showing the measurement of the main inlet opening to be the same 1 5/16", though the casting internally is totally different.

Here's the original carb with the original gasket on it with the 1 1/4" measurement of the new carb's oultet for reference: here

Side by side, can you tell which is which.

LOL. no reason at all that a woman can't do this. Heres what you need to know and do. The square thing is the primer. and you need the choke assembly to use it. Get the choke assembly, there is a small nipple on the bottom of the carb that fits into a small hole on the bottom of the choke assembly, then it screws to the face of the carb to hold it in place. To start the motor after you squeeze the primer ball til it's hard, you pull the choke all the way out once (primes the intake), then push it in one click (for full choke), two clicks (for half choke), or all the way back in (no choke), to start the motor. If you pull it all the way out more than once, you will flood the motor. And keep in mind if it's warm weather, you may not need the choke at all. here

Mechanical stuff: For both of these procedures, back the boat in the water and leave it secured to the trailer. [links]

Easy to do, and doing it yourself will save you tons. Just remember, with any adjustment like that it HAS to be in water. Keep us posted on the outcome. Good luck.

Smaller outboard engines require replacement of breaker points and condenser. Larger engines have electronic ignitions and may only need adjustments.

Drain and change gear case lubricant. Check lubricant for a milky color that may be cause by water in the lubricant. Also check for metal particles. A small amount of particles indicates normal wear. A large amount of particles or water in the lubricant will mean the gear case will need to be examined by an authorized mechanic. [links]

The fuel system includes the fuel lines and filter. Inspect all fuel hoses and lines for kinks, leaks and other damage. Replace hoses that leak or are damaged. Remove the old fuel filter and replace with a new Mercury-recommend filer. If your model has a filter screen, remove and clean it.

Lubricate all lubrication points. Lubricate points more frequently when the outboard is used in salt water. Lubrication points are the steering cable grease fitting, swivel bracket, tilt support lever, title tube, tiller handle and the steering link rod pivot-points. more

Faulty water pumps can result in engine damage. Replace the pump impeller, seals, and gaskets.
