This is kind of a grey area. We were tested as a fifth wheel hitch and are approved as a fifth wheel hitch. According to DOT regulations because it is a fifth wheel hitch we does not need safety chains. However we do utilize a gooseneck ball to secure the fifth wheel hitch into place creating a solid base with no moving points. On conventional gooseneck trailers chains are required due to the latching mechanism on the gooseneck trailer. The Andersen Ultimate Connection does not utilize a latch nor does it pivot at the point of the ball. Our unconventional setup is much like the OEM puck system that is utilized to accept fifth wheel hitches sold in the newer trucks today. here

Unfortunately it is up to the DOT office to interpret the regulations and laws. We have only heard of one case, out of the 35,000 units that we have on the road today, where the DOT officer insisted on having the customer add safety chains to his setup. For this reason we do offer safety chains (part # 3230) for our Ultimate Connection. here

Remember, improper rigging of safety chains can not only result in loss of control of both your trailer and tow vehicle, but can also cause serious injury or worse if the trailer uncouples from the tow vehicle.

After some research, it appears the laws governing the details of trailers, including trailer safety chains, are regional (by State or Province), yet all (that I could find) require safety chains. Most of the laws are consistent across the board, but some have slightly different details. For instance, some states actually require “chain”, yet cable appears to be a legal substitute in others. Some mandate a particular type of hook (or more to the point, retainers on hooks), others do not. Some dictate how chains must cross; others do not.

Loops that connect the chains are big, and right at the bottom. If this hitch fails, the chains will be first to contact the ground and grind. This is poor placement.

Well, let’s not bog down. The truth is, if you responsibly act so your loads are secure, then you probably won’t have trouble.
