If it has a distributor then you need to jumper the switchbox. Still simple. more

If your outboard is lacking compression, you probably won’t be able to fix it at the boat ramp. At this point, it might be time to call your mechanic.
When an outboard starter fails, it will turn the engine over slowly, not at all, or make a clicking sound. It can also spin extremely fast but not engage or turn the flywheel of the engine.
You should see a minimum of 12.6 volts. If you get a reading less than this, it’s likely that your battery isn’t fully charged, which could be causing your issues.
Deactivate your lanyard cut-off switch, so the engine doesn’t get accidentally started. more
Otherwise, if the fuse seems good, you want to check the boat’s main power plug connecting the engine wiring to the vessel. [links]
Now is a good time to determine if the gauges and lights are operating. here

What size battery is needed for outboard engines with electric start and trim n tilt ?
not concerned too much about other electricals like lights, bait pumps etc as these are just speedboats with
very little other electric consumption onboard.
Ok both run guages, and a few little bits like simple fish finder and vhf radio's, but thats about it.
No silly sound system to drain battery, and no gimic gizmo's.

Some small boats use an outboard motor as their only means of propulsion. Other times, you see outboard motors installed on boats as a backup. Outboard motors are simple. All you have to do is start the motor, and it will propel the boat through the water. Depending on the type of motor you have, you might have to pull start it, or you may need a key. Once the motor is going, you can use it to drive your boat until you are ready to stop and coast. [links]
