With Felling’s Air Tilt Trailers, superior towing capability and balance were achieved by placing the axles further back compared to other tilt trailers on the market. The Felling Trailers’ Air Tilt Trailer models are also great for transporting low clearance equipment such as pavers, scissor lifts, forklifts and more with its low-clearance loading angle. With the option of ramps, a load angle as low as 7º can be achieved for loading equipment. Felling Trailers’ Air Tilt Trailers utilize air, powered from the tow vehicle, to tilt the trailer and optional ramps, eliminating the need for hydraulics. The air power from the tow vehicle fills two air bags, which then raise the trailer smoothly; the air bag will then keep the deck in the tilted position to allow for loading/unloading of multiple pieces of equipment. The trouble is that when you only back the trailer in that far, there usually isn't enough water depth behind the trailer to float the boat off. It rolls back and more times than not, hits the ground/ramp, because the water back there is not even knee deep.

Hi cb. Tilt trailers allow you to launch and retrieve your boat from places where you don't have a proper launch, such as the side of a lake, pond or beach. They also make loading the boat on/off the trailer while on land much easier. You can slide the boat off, work on the trailer as needed, then wench it back on. MagicTilt is probably the most well know brand, but there are many others. You don't necessarily need it on a trailer, but it's nice to have. Here's a vid of one in action.
You ended up having to back the trailer in far enough so that the back of the trailer is in the water in order to have enough depth to float the boat as it comes off the trailer. So much for keeping your wheel bearings dry. here
The idea of the tilt trailer first appeared back in the fifties. The idea was to be able to launch and retrieve your boat without putting your trailer wheel bearings in the water. here

You are correct, however, that doesn't mean he can't change it to meet his needs (wants). I changed one many years ago, and I am sure there are others that modify their trailers to meet their needs. here
I have a LodeRite tilting trailer that came with my boat & never used the tilt feature. I'm not sure I could now that I ran hydraulic brake lines through the tongue without modification. It's always been a royal pain to get the boat on it straight when driving on. Even winching it on has been difficult to get it straight (the keel always seems off-center of the front keel roller). I've put a good bit of time & money into this trailer so I'd hate to have to replace it, but is there anything I can do to make this trailer more user-friendly at the ramps? I've fixed way too many gouges in my keel from going off the side of the rollers!
That's what I'm thinking of doing. Not quite sure how I'm going to mount some bunks that far up, but I'll come up with something.

You might try installing centering bunks that guide the keel and hold it in position. Don't know if they will work on your particular trailer, but if you go to the ramp and look at other trailers, you might get some ideas on how to do it.
