Read the measurement at the bottom of the transom. Boat transoms are shaped differently depending on the make and model. Measure each type of hull to the bottom center of the transom on each type of boat. [links]

Just because you change the way you use your boat doesn't necessarily mean that you need to change the length of your motor's drive shaft. Converting your long shaft outboard motor to a short drive shaft does, however, mean changing more than just the drive shaft. Before you start the conversion, you need to be sure your boat can handle a shorter shaft.

If you decide to go with the shorter shaft, the exhaust tunnel -- the part of the motor between the motor's top cowling and the lower unit, where the gears and propeller are contained -- that's on the motor now will be to long. This means you'll have to change the exhaust tunnel as well. Not only the exhaust tunnel will require replacement. If you change to a short drive shaft, you'll need to change the other shaft that runs through the exhaust tunnel, as it will be too long as well -- you'll need to install a new, shorter shift rod. An outboard motor comes with short drive shaft, a long drive shaft or an extra-long shaft. The drive shaft is supposed to be long enough so the bottom of the anti-cavitation plate, the shelf-like projection above the propeller, remains in the water when you're running the boat at full speed. A short-shaft outboard has a drive shaft that's 15 inches long; long-shaft outboards have a 20-inch drive shaft. The extra-long shaft is 25 inches long.

Long time lurker first time poster. I've had my 24' 2 log, pontoon for a few years now and just got a new to me 70hp Johnson, i believe its a 20" shaft, but see attached picture and correct me if I'm wrong. I used it all last year with no real issue except for the fact that I can never get my bow out of the water and at WOT its ventilating, doesn't matter if its just me or fully loaded. I always keep it trimmed all the way down to keep it deeper in the water otherwise it will ventilate at lower speeds. But I'm always plowing into the water, perhaps because I'm trimmed down, and if I run into any waves at high speed I usually get a good amount of water over the bow. I understand that I should match my shaft length with the length of my transom which is 20". My cavitation plate is about half way down my pontoons,I'm also told it should be at or below them. I attached a picture of my motor and a picture of my transom, any advice is appreciated.
