Thanks Jim, I know the model number means certain things to Merc, the only things that I know about it is the third and fourth number is the engine horsepower the full number is most of the engine part number and the one or two letters at the end somehow tells us the year if you knew the code of the letters that i'm not sure of. Looking at it now it seems the F would stand for four stroke and I'll only guess the 20 will be the length. [links]

Look at the model number. If the second or third digit is an "L" it's a long shaft (20"). If there is no L, it's a short shaft (15"). [links]

2) Measure the outboard motor from the top of the mounting bracket clamp to the bottom of the cavitation plate over the propeller.

An outboard might come equipped with a short shaft, a long shaft or an extra-long shaft, the shaft being the driveshaft that connects the powerhead -- the engine -- to the lower unit, where the propeller shaft, the propeller and the forward and reverse gears all live. Driveshaft lengths are standard throughout the boating industry. A short shaft is 15 inches long, a long shaft 20 inches long and an extra-long shaft 25 inches long. [links]

Measure from the bottom of your outboard's engine compartment down to the bottom of the cavitation plate -- the horizontal metal wing above the propeller. If the measurement lies between 19 and 21 inches, it's a short shaft. If it's about five inches longer than that, it's a long shaft. If it's about 10 inches longer than the short shaft's 20 inches, it's an extra-long shaft. [links]

In many cases, this distance between the inner side of the motor’s mounting bracket and its anti ventilation plate can be slightly bigger than 20 inches, and if this is the case, it’s a good thing. here

Some of our clients who already own an old outboard motor, and others who contemplate buying a used one, ask us how to measure the length of an outboard motor’s propeller shaft, in order to know for sure that the motor indeed complies with the 20″ long (L) standard that Wavewalk requires.
This is an important question, because Wavewalk kayaks and boats work well only with outboard motors that comply with the 20″ long (L) standard set by outboard motor manufacturers, and our company strongly recommends not to use short shaft (S) standard motors.

Here is the full answer:
For this matter, the propeller shaft length is measured from the inner top side of the motor’s mounting bracket to the horizontal anti-ventilation plate that’s above the propeller.

Note that sometimes the anti-ventilation plate is called anti cavitation plate, although this is an incorrect term.

If the distance you measured is under 20″, it inevitably means that the motor does not comply with the 20″ (L) standard.
In fact, most outboard propeller shafts are slightly longer than their stated standard. For example, the length of a 2.3 HP Honda L shaft is 22.5″, and the length of this motor’s short (S) version is 16.5″. Similarly, the length of a short-shaft (S) 4 HP, 5HP and 6 HP Tohatsu is 17.1″.

Ben Hogan Golf was founded in 1953 by Hogan and two friends 3. It was an auspicious year to start the company, since Hogan won five out of six tournaments in 1953, including the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open. As Golfio says, "Ben Hogan Golf has always stood for exceptional golf equipment." In 1968, Hogan teamed up with his designers to produce the Apex shaft, which was softer in the long irons and firmer in the short irons and considered by many to be the most consistent shaft in the game 13. here

Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, brought the same focus he had on the course to his Ben Hogan Golf Company 3. Dissatisfied with the quality of equipment that was manufactured at the time, he was determined to "make the best golf clubs in the world" by using "the most exacting tolerances modern machinery would allow." The Ben Hogan Golf Company became renowned for its blade irons, in particular, which are considered to be the epitome of irons for golf purists 3.

The first Apex iron set was introduced in 1972. It was a compact blade with a thick muscleback, designed for the best players. The Apex was slightly redesigned a number of times in the 1970s and 1980s, but the basic concept was the same -- to create a set of irons with the best feel and playability. In those years, the Apex was almost useless to higher handicappers, since the blade had a small sweet spot and no forgiveness was built in for mishits.

Ben Hogan Golf changed hands a number of times 3. It was sold to Spalding in 1997 and to Callaway in 2003. In 1999, the Apex Plus was introduced, a blade forged from 1030 carbon steel. In 2001, the Ben Hogan name was finally put on an oversized club with a cavity back, an iron made with the middle to high handicapper in mind. Hogan who died in 1997, may have spun in his grave at the thought of his name being stamped on clubs designed for weekend duffers.

Should I take the raft onto the water and measure the exact distance from the top of the transom to the water line? Or measure from the main engine prop up to the water line? more
