Blades have other important features built into their design. Rake is the angle between the blade and the hub. The rake angle can be flat, staying the same along the entire blade, or progressive, meaning the angle increases as it approaches the tip. Props have between 0 and 20 degrees rake. The rake angle determines how much the bow lifts out of the water. High rake propellers are ideal for light-weight, high speed boats. Too much rake, however, will strain the engine and reduce overall performance.

Pitch is the distance the propeller will move the boat after one revolution (not accounting for slip). A lower pitched propeller will create more power due to more engine RPMs, but the boat will move slower. A higher pitched prop allows the boat to move faster by travelling a farther distance with each rotation. When choosing a propeller, choose a pitch that will keep the engine RPM in its recommended operating range. Going under the range will cause the boat to lug, while going over can cause engine strain.

Before you dive into choosing a propeller, understand your boat’s intended use. Consider your average speed, load, and boating location. If you will be using the boat for multiple applications, you may need to switch props. The propeller choice directly affects the engine RPM and therefore its performance. Choose a propeller that puts the engine RPM at the midpoint or higher of the wide open throttle (WOT) range with a normal load. This operating range will translate to the highest horsepower available from your outboard. Refer to your engine operating manual for the operating range. here

You can back up in a straight line, if you have a dual-prop boat, and avoid the hazard boaters have long called prop walk, where a single propeller pulls the boat's stern in the prop's direction of turn. Whether your boat is equipped with outboards, inboard-outboard drives or the dual rudders of an inboard, having two propellers that can turn together or turn independently can give you significant advantages over any vessel driven by a single propeller

A dual-prop boat allows you to avoid the issue of the unwanted sideways movement called prop walk. Two propellers rotating in opposite directions -- the normal rotation for dual-prop boats -- cancel out the forces that pull your boat's stern away from a straight line. You also can use this counter-rotation to cause prop walk deliberately, to move your boat sideways into a cramped parking place, a maneuver a boat equipped with rudders will handle more readily. Dual props also make for quicker, tighter turns and faster stopping, giving you a wider range of control and making your boat more nimble and safer.

Powered propulsion became available for maritime craft with the development of the steam engine in the 18th century. The trend was initially to use large paddles to provide thrust, as on the stern-wheel and side-wheel steam paddleboats. Inventors continued to experiment with screw-type propellers, which were literally very large, very long screws. In 1835, part of such a screw broke off during testing, leaving a portion that looked much like a modern boat propeller blade. The dynamics involved in marine propulsion are very similar to those employed for aviation. For example, like the blades of an airplane, the blades on a boat propeller aren’t flat, but instead appear to have been twisted from a parallel plane to one nearly perpendicular to the propeller’s shaft. The concept underlying the boat propeller was developed by Archimedes in the third century BC. He developed a device called the Archimedes Screw, which is still used today, that transports water from lower to higher elevations. Very similar to a modern auger in design and operation, it is still in extensive use worldwide for a wide variety of tasks, including irrigation and waste management. Similar screws were experimented with for marine propulsion. Before the development of powered engines, marine propulsion was limited to wind power and manual rowing or paddling. Rowing and paddling generally uses blades to drag a boat through the water, but one use of a blade, called sculling, acts most like a propeller because the sculler pushes the water to the rear of the boat. A sculler stands in the rear of a small boat and, using a single oar, will sweep it through the water in an arc more or less perpendicular to the boat’s direction of travel, with each sweep of the arc twisting the oar so that the blade is at an angle of 30 to 60 degrees to the direction of travel.

A boat propeller works by pushing water, which propels the boat in the opposite direction. More precisely, it transforms rotational energy into thrust; thus, the turning propeller increases the water pressure to its rear, and moves into the area of reduced pressure in front of the propeller, taking the boat with it. The forces involved are consistent with Newton’s third law — for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. That is, when the boat propeller pushes the water backward, it propels the boat forward. more
