Depending on how much you have to spend on the peice of aluminum will dictate how big you wanna make it. Make the plate at least 2 to 6" s wider than the engine bracket. And at least 2 - 6" s lower than the bracket. With it being 2 - 6" s lower you wanna fold the top of the plate(at the top of the transom) at a 90. This isn't functional but I think it looks good.
Get the plate lined up in the middle and camp to the transom or have someone hold it. From the inside use a 1/2" bit and mark the plate. Remove it and drill your holes. Since you're going to remove it. I'd use some 4200 marine sealant. With a nice thick bead, I'd wrap it around the 4 bolt holes. Don't be scared to use to much. When I tighten the motor/plate to the transom I'd like to see some squeeze out the sides. Just let it dry and cut it off with a razor. Make sure to use some sort of backing brace on the inside bolts in the transom. One on the top and one on the bottom.

H2ONut has done the best transom replacement I've seen, I can't see where a plate would do him any good. Had I to do it over, I would have done the SeaCast or similar! No rot, no compression at bolt through locations yada yada yada, how could ya go wrong.

Unless you do something to strengthen the front of the splashwell you aren't adding any strength with that set up. Looks pretty but does nothing useful. You would be better off with full width aluminum transom plates (one in the motor well too) and maybe an extra knee or two to the main fore and aft floor supports.

If you want to do something that going to work plate the transom and put threaded rods through the transom bolted to the stingers. The boat would break in half before the transom let go.
Thats what i would do. more

if your transom is not rotten and just want to add strength
i suggest adding the knee braces as starters taken up to the top deck to take out bottom transom flex at lower motor mount bolts
then add alluminum plate across back transom and bending over top of transom and down past upper motor mounts in splash well
this is a 1 piece u shaped plate that creates an allinimum channel for upper transom strength and flex
the upper motor mount bolts go through the plate ,trasnsom, plate
now both lower and upper mounts are more stable

Also seen here, he put a 1" x 1" thick walled square tube up under the top lip of the transom that also got welded to the corner gussets to strengthen the transom even more. [links]

And to throw out one more thought . it could cost a couple hundred bucks to buy some aluminum and supplies to reinforce your transom yourself . or closer to 500 to have a fabrication shop do it for you. You could get a good condition used boat similar to your current boat for about the same price. Just something to think about. more
