You should be confident with a die grinder to do this. Just a little care is all you need.
I do not like using O/A if I don't have to. I'd rather not heat and burn near machine components if not needed.
Most of my pressed bearings are removed like this or with a bead of weld.
You'll have to burn off the outer race. No big deal, just don't point the torch at the part you don't want cut. Start at the open end, tangential to the shaft and don't dally around. Quickly heat the edge of the race until it starts to melt and hit the O2. Just wash a slot in the outer race, stopping as close as you dare to the shoulder. Repeat 180 degrees out. If it doesn't fall off, wedge a screwdriver or chisel in the gap, or just grab with pliers, and the remaining ring at the shoulder will pop. [links]
That's why carefull grinding is a good method, minimal risk of distortion. more
I used – veeery carefully – the dremel thing. You need excellent light and some vacuum to get rid of the dust. Stop and grind, stop and grind… In my case the stuck outer race suddenly came loose. [links]
I mostly either use a slide hammer that has two jaws that open outward to try and get under the lip. here
The topic ‘stuck bearing – inner destroyed so just the outer race’ is closed to new replies.
If this doesn’t happen: very, very carefully start heating the aluminium frame with a heat gun. Be carefully not to burn the paint so. Aluminium expands much more than the bearing outer race steel ring. [links]
the inner came out leaving the outer race only. there is a lip on the other side so i only have 1 mm difference so a blind bearing puller wont work. I definitely cannot grab it and extract it.

After picking up a new hub, bearings and seal, I packed the new inner bearing and installed it with the seal but when I tried to install the hub it wouldn't go all the way in the axle!
Re: Help! Bearing race stuck on axle
I was just arriving at the lake when we pulled in a gas station and I saw my wheel hub smoking. By that time the bearings were gone and the hub was broken. The wheel came right off when we lifted the trailer - luckily it didn't fly off while on route and that each of my two axles can support more than my boat weighs! I drove home on three wheels.
Buy a cheap Mapp gas torch and go to it.

Any ideas. I have a bearing race that is seized to the spindle. The bearing got hot and fell apart, but the lady kept driving. When I got the car the wheel was making all the noise and wriggling all over the place. Jacked up the car and it was easy to tell the bearing was shot.
My next try tomorrow will be to use a grinder with a metal cutting wheel. If someone has a easy way to break this thing loose, please share it with me.
Anyhow I pulled the wheel and the outer bearing just fell apart. The race is stuck on the spindle and I can't seem to get it off. I have tried a gear puller, it just pops off once you put some pressure on it. Attempted to beat it off with a hammer and punch, just beat the heck out of my knuckles. Tried to apply heat to the race with mapp gas, while applying puller and/or using punch and hammer. Managed to beat knuckles while burning fingers. Even gave a pipe wench a try, but realized it was also pinching down on the race at the same time so didn't think it would work to well and it didn't.
