If there is under a gallon of stale gas and you filled your tank up with fresh, I don't think there'd be an issue with the stale gas. It would dilute enough you shouldn't have to worry about it. more

3 year old gas? Don't worry about it. Drain it as far as possible, then just dilute it by filling the tank with new gas. It'll be fine. here

If you can't drop (or don't want to) your fuel tank, or cannot put a syphon hose down into it through the filler neck, there's just about no way to get the small amount of gas out which you're talking about, short of punching a hole in the bottom of the tank and then patching it after the fact. To be honest, I'd drop the tank before I'd punch a hole in it. more

I've got an old Chevy ('75) with a top-opening to the gas tank. The car has been sitting for 3 years without use. I want to clean the stale gas out of the tank. I have drained it as well as I can by disconnecting the fuel pump supply line. However, I'm sure there is a residual amount of gas in the tank. Under normal circumstances, I'd drop the gas tank, however, on this car, the former-owner tack-welded the exhaust pipes together which need to be disassembled to drop the tank. I don't want to have to cut out the exhaust pipes if I can avoid it.

From some of the largest fleets in North America to large construction and mining operations, commercial industries rely on Power Service diesel additives to provide year-round diesel engine performance improvement, trouble-free winter operability and proper fuel tank hygiene.

TO CLEAN FUEL TANKS AND PREVENT PREMATURE FUEL-FILTER PLUGGING: If possible, pump or drain excess water and fuel contaminants from bottom of fuel tank until diesel fuel appears. Add 80 ounces of Clear-Diesel Fuel & Tank Cleaner to each 125 gallons of diesel fuel.

Even in your location, relatively protected from cold temps, the last little while being the exception, it would still be prudent to run additives such as the white bottle of PowerService or something like it during the fall to spring period. The problem where you are is that they don't worry so much about running "winter blend" diesel, a sudden cold snap can then be a real PITA.

So, yes, eventually the 'gel' will dissolve on it's own once the temperature rises a ways above the freezing point. The problem is though, you would then have a big blob of wax, asphalt and water trapped in the filter. Not a good situation. more

First of all, the paraffins (wax) and asphaltines (yup, what asphalt is made from) that naturally exist in the fuel start to solidify. This usually isn't a problem when they are liquids, but as solids they start to build up on the fuel filter plugging it solid.

BTW, I tried just the filter idea on my Ram and it didn't work--the lines were still froze. The truck had to be tented with plastic and warmed with a heater for half a day. (Snow and ice from plowing the night before was packed up under the chassis which all had to melt) .

The fuel my brother poured in his tractor had been in a 5 gallon can for a couple of years or so his guess. Which would have been two winters cycles and normally our lows don't drop below 20, hey to me 40 is cold.

With it you can liquefy fuel, thaw frozen fuel filters and even remove water from the fuel system. here

If caught off guard by the cold weather your diesel powered rig or light truck might be very hard to start or not start at all.

But what do you do if you forget to add this miraculous fuel additive or if this crazy weather caught you off guard?

As you already know, gelling of diesel fuels occurs in winter conditions and affects all drivers that live in very cold areas. The secret on how to thaw gelled diesel fuel in an emergency is having the right stuff on board. Continue reading.
The past few years, due to climate change, the winter seasons are sometimes longer and more extreme. This makes winter fuel blends found at most truck stops and other fueling stations incapable of handling the colder temperatures for a diesel engine to operate trouble free.

CleanBoost® Diesel Rescue Emergency De-Gel™ is the only formula out there that helps you INSTANTLY. All you have to do is follow the instructions. It instantly goes to work on re-liquefying gelled diesel fuel. It thaws out frozen fuel filters (that are mostly filled with ice, water and gelled fuel). It prevents fuel filter icing while removing water from the fuel system. Finally, it extends the life of frozen or gelled fuel filters, injectors and pumps. CleanBoost® Diesel Rescue Emergency De-Gel™ is effective in all diesel fuels, including ULSD (ultra low sulfer diesel).
