From one DIY to another, I understand you're anticipation to find the problem and fix it. However, this is usually where you want to step back, assess the situation completely, and proceed cautiously. If not careful, you could dive in deeper than needed and end up with a lot more problems than you started with. Trust me, I'm currently doing an overhaul of a '71 1150, I've created many headaches simply because I was impatient. There's something to be said about doing it right the first time. Good luck! more

did you turn the flywheel ( plugs removed) by hand with the lowerend removed, and have that same problem?
Carry some carb cleaner with you next time out (if you want to continue to fix it yourself.) When it dies, shoot the carb cleaner down the carb throat. If it runs, you have a fuel problem - if no change, then it's NOT fuel. [links]
It's a shame when I see people waste their money and time. With the cost of the fuel tank, bulb, gas, you could have had it diagnosed and maybe fixed. more
My friendly advice as mentioned already, is stop guessing at the problem and have it looked at by a marine mechanic.
You may be fighting on two fronts or 2 types of problems.
By the way, a fuel filter will never cause a motor to completely stop but then allow it to restart. If the filter had that much obstruction, then your fuel system is contaminated so badly it would never run to begin with.

I tried to remove the lower unit to change the water pump impeller. I removed 3 mounting bolds and was told the unit should slide off. I was unable to remove it because the shift leaver bar was attached to the shift link under the power head. here
What is the right way to remove the lower unit from this particular engine without removing the powerhead, which seems to be the only alternative at this point. [links]
I bought a service manual, but the manual i bought covers far too many engines and doesn't seem to include information specific to my engine. here
This is my motor, thanks to the fine folks of this community:
