Re: Removing throttle control box lever
If you have access to the rear of the bulkhead where it's mounted it'll help. The Quicksilver 2000 and 3000 mount with 3 bolts which are hidden from operators view until you remove some asthetic effects. The 2000 is outboard bulkhead mount, cables exposed, with the fast idle lever on the top rear. The 3000 is in the bulkhead mounted, cables behind the bulkhead recognized by big, black, plastic button you push to disconnect the shifter from the shift/throttle for fast idle.
Re: Removing throttle control box lever
The Mercury control box can not be removed without removing the control handle. To remove the handle, you use a screwdriver to pry out the center button, usually breaking it in the process. It is a push on button not really designed to come off so you will need to use excessive force. Inside the cavity there will be a brass 5/8 nut. use a deep socket to remove it and the handle will come off. This exposes the mounting screws which hold the whole smash together.
When I removed my 3000 to replace with a 2000 I encountered what you said. I wound up with a recip saw and metal cutting blade cutting the handle shaft off so that I could get to the rest of it to get the bolts out and that was on a 2000 year model boat kept indoors or under cover and never used in salt water.
The old setup used a 4 prong plug (red, green, blue & purple) which controls the trailering function (up and down) of the engine; located under the lever grip.
Are those the same lengths for yet boat?
Any suggestions, besides the beer I drank, before I go back to experimenting? more

Re: Removing throttle control box lever more
I know this thread is old, but this thread ended my 3 days of agony! After having to fix my "throttle only" mechanism, I had torn apart and rebuilt my control box a million different ways trying to get it back together and working correctly (stupid me didn't take any reference pictures when I tore it down the first time). I seriously had at least 24 solid working hours on the control box and was getting frustrated. The pictures on this thread got me back up and running in well under an hour. here
Re: Mercury Quicksilver Control Repair here
Control Boxes are way over looked when it comes to maintenance. A Box as yours was can send people looking to replace cables and all sorts of things. Glad you found the virtues of control box maintenance! here
