Prepping rust for paint is most easily done with a chemical rust tranformer. 'Rust Transformer' is one brand, I think it's made by 3M or carries the Rustoleum brand. These liquids, that are sprayed or brushed on chemically react with rust, hardening and neutralizing it, turning to a shiny black well bonded metal. It can then be sanded (not necessary) and primed or painted. Even if you decide to sand or blast first, pros always neutralize bare metal before painting, with a chemical agent or neutralizer, first. For speed and great rust prep use a chemical transformer (not rust looseners, or other similar stuff). Dries in about 30 minutes, non-chemically reacted liquid remains white, reacted liquid turns black, an indicator enough material was used to neutralize all the rust. [links]

hmmmm just MHO here but wouldnt want to encapsulate any rust.at least i wouldnt.those paints do cover well but do not stop the rust from spreading too well.i currently have a trailer that i tried this sort of paint on.guess what the rust is still there and is worse.nearly cancerous.dont try to cheat just get out there and do the work needed.sandblast is great a wire wheel good option too.if all else fails get the sandpaper.think that was 3 cents worth.oh well keep the change.edit: i checked out the link thats a cool sight.come in very handy here

I would not recommend a chemical rust transformer product on any stuctural, load-bearing part due to hydrogen embrittlement.

Since a boat trailer is almost all load-bearing, these phosphoric acid-based products are to be avoided. [links]

I first go over with a wire brush to get rid of surface rust, than rust convert then. spray on Zinc/coldgal paint on.

Wire brush get rid of scale but unless fresh and very tough don't really prepare a surface for painting. Sand and the area afterwards so the paint gets some bite on the metal.

Didn't know that they had a UV topcoat. Had used their stuff on pumps in sheds and it worked well. There must be another product as well as I have seen it used direct and last years on wharf railings. maybe that is teh silver one.

The jockey wheel is similar to the winch; make sure the main shaft and the mechanism it pivots on is always greased. Oil the handle knob and check the tyre for cracks where the shaft goes through (apply some grease to the shaft as well).

Tow couplings are pretty important so make sure all is in proper working order here; again grease and oil all moving parts but before you do have a quick look up inside the coupling for any wear that might stop the coupling locking down on the tow ball.

When installing the new ones first pack the new bearings and inside hub with marine grease. Carefully punch the new cones down inside their respective sides of the hub until they reach the stopping lip.

Pull the hub toward you; hopefully it will slide off easily. See the photos for an illustration of the following procedure. Wheel bearings are made up of two parts: cups and cones. The cups should pull out of the hubs with your fingers.

According to 2017 reviews, the top penetrating fluids are as follows:

Machinists Workshop, the magazine, says that commercially available solvents and penetrating oils are officially rated or compared by applying the product to similarly rusted parts and then applying a uniform torque to all of the wrenches removing all of the rusted parts. Those that supposedly work best are ordinarily listed first. Among those you just read, however, the list is based on reviews by customers and others who have actually used the products. Of the above listed products, all got at least four out of five stars, or as many as five out of five stars.

Once those hideously corroded parts have been exorcised from your trailer, it’s time to replace them with brighter and better parts. In order to stop premature corrosion in its tracks, it is recommended that you use stainless steel or galvanized hardware.

A safer, and some say better, tool might be an air or electric grinder or cutting tool. Certain individuals tend to feel a bit intimidated by the Sawzall. But it remains an exceptional and versatile tool, nonetheless.
