An exhaust manifold can suffer from many serious and complex problems. However, there are many problems that are definitely simple enough for anyone to fix on their own. One of these problems is stains caused by rust. If something near your manifold is rusty, some may be carried to it by water and stain it.

Scrub the manifold with the scrub pad, using it to apply your cleaning ingredient of choice. [links]

Both lemon juice and white vinegar can remove rust stains. However, the one that works better will vary. Because of this, it is a good idea to test both if you have them available. If you do not, you may opt against tracking down the one you are missing and simply using the one you have.

Soak an old rag or a cheap dishcloth in the vinegar and wrap it around the rusted area of the exhaust. The longer you leave the cloth in place, the better the results will be. After you have let it rest for a while, take away the cloth and wipe down the pipe with water to clear away the loosened rust.

Also, how do you clean an exhaust manifold? Remove the hoses which are attached to the manifold, then, using some WD40, spray the bolts on the manifold heat shield. Remove the bolts. After the bolts have been removed, you can remove the exhaust manifold. Using a lacquer thinner, soak the interior of the manifold.

I'll get pictures posted sometime soon, it's amazing what a difference it has made.

If you are planning to use Calyx dressing, you might want to degrease before and after blasting. Then, warm the manifold for a while in a vented oven (and let it cool). This will drive off any volatile matter and perhaps better clear the pores.

I have pretty limited means right now, 1 car garage, very little money to put into the truck, definitely not enough dough or space for a big compressor and bead blasting cabinet. more

i agree with the others that bead blasting is the bees knees, but like my Dad always says "poor folk got poor ways" [links]

So when I wanted to de-rust my manifolds, I used phosphoric acid (availiable at home depot). 4 gallons will run you about $65 and it will clean them up perfectly (and you can reuse, and reuse etc. etc. . I just did it in a 5 gallon bucket, and did them 1/2 at a time. make sure to hose it off, and dry with an old towel afterward, of else you'll be left with a layer of white phosphoric acid dust. Just got done with the intake last night, and it looks brand new. If there's heavy rusting (There most likely will be on the exhaust manifold) there will be a light layer of grey crud left on there afterward. About 10 minutes with a wire brush and it will be good as new. here
