Put on the safety glasses and gloves. Apply a commercial polishing compound to the glass and polish it using a variable speed drill set on low. Most compounds contain cerium oxide as an abrasive. This removes glass until the surrounding area is level with the pit. As the glass is being removed, some of it will begin to fill the pit and give a false impression that the pit is being repaired. To prevent this, continually flush the area by lightly squeezing a sponge that has been soaked with water to keep the compound damp. [links]

Scrub the windshield with a nylon-bristle brush. Use a liquid dish soap. This will strip any oily residue from the glass and clean the pitted areas of any particles that have been trapped inside them. Rinse the glass with water. more

Scrub the area with a brush and liquid dish soap again to remove the used compound and clean the pitted areas. Dry and inspect the polished area. Apply more compound and polish the area with the drill. Keep the area damp. Do not let the compound become dry, as that could cause unwanted scratches. Continually moisten the area with a small trickle of water from the sponge. Repeat this process until satisfactory results are achieved.

Windshields are hard to repair, regardless of the problem. It takes patience and planning, a thorough understanding of the process involved and a realistic expectation of the outcome. Improvements can be definitely made, but returning damaged glass to like-new quality is highly unlikely. With that in mind, there are several processes that can be used to polish pitted glass. Severely abraded glass should be replaced.

Clean the glass a final time and apply a rain-repellent formula available at auto parts stores. These fill in small surface imperfections, improve the overall appearance and add enhanced viability. They have the added benefit of repelling water and slowing windshield abrasion.

Turn the sander off and feel the pits with a fingertip. Continue using the sander until the surface where the pits were is completely filled with pit polish and level with the rest of the windshield.

Rocks and other flying debris that hit a windshield will make pits or small concave holes in the glass. Repeatedly parking a car under some types of trees enables saps to drip on windshields and form pits over time. Using automobile glass pit polish and a sander fills the holes to the surface level and smooths them for a seamless repair job.

When these particles hit your windshield every day as you drive, they cause damage to your windshield. When colliding with your windshield at such high speeds, the sand and other particles from the road will become embedded in your windshield.

It’s a natural form of wear on your windshield. Windshield pitting is caused by:

You may be thinking, I’ve noticed a little glare on my windshield, but it’s not on the driver’s side, I should be fine. Think again! If the sunlight, or any street lights or headlights at night, hit the windshield pit or crater at just the right angle it could redirect the light in a way that blinds you and puts you and your passengers at risk. It’s important to get your windshield checked if you’re noticing any obstructions to your vision, specifically when light hits your windshield in just the right way. If you’re blinded anytime while you’re driving, be safe and get the windshield inspected. While windshield pitting is more common in desert areas, it can eventually affect any vehicle in any climate–don’t think you’re immune!

Windshields undergo wear and tear, right along with the rest of your car–and your windshield glass is actually quite vulnerable. Although your windshield is made of thick, smooth-appearing, shatterproof glass, it can be scraped and scratched from everyday road hazards, friction and harsh weather. Over time, all the inclement weather and rough road conditions you’ve driven thorough, or parked in, take their toll.

When you think of windshield damage, most people think first of major, sudden damage—like car crashes. The windshield of a totaled car comes to mind. You might also think of a car that’s had a boulder (or a smaller object) fall on it, cracking (or chipping) the windshield. But windshield pitting is far more gradual damage that requires prompt attention and repair to keep you safe on the road. Windshield pitting is wear and tear damage. It’s less obvious and less well known than car accident windshield damage, but pitting can make driving dangerous. here

When you need windshield repair, choose an auto glass expert who’s not interested in profits over safety. Select a shop that keeps its pricing modest and keyed to the type of windshield and complexity of installation. For high-end cars with higher-tech windshields, including defogging capability, rain sensors and more, prices should still be reasonable. Complex shapes (like the Prius’ uniquely curved back windshield) may take a bit more time to install. If you have an older, classic car, sourcing and properly installing your windshield may be more time-consuming and costly than a newer-model economy car windshield. Chances are, however, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with your windshield replacement price quote at Anthony Volk Glass–and we guarantee you’ll be delighted with our windshield replacement service and workmanship.

In order to complete a windshield scratch repair, here are some steps to help you accomplish the task. It should be noted that the process for repairing a large windshield scratch might be better handled by a professional in order to ensure that the job is done correctly and further damage does not ensue. Small scratches should be addressed immediately when detected and can be handled by most car owners. The repair process helps restore the window's structural integrity.

Wash the windshield thoroughly with soap and water in order to clean it. Rinse all of the soap residue or glass cleaner with water and dry the window before applying the rubbing compound to the scratch. Place the rubbing compound into the scratch--the compound should look like toothpaste and be easy to apply. Spray the compound with water and then use a cloth to rub the compound gently, being sure not to apply to much pressure. here

Run your finger or a fingernail over the scratch to determine if it is surface scratch or a deep scratch. A surface scratch will feel smooth to the touch and this is the type of scratch that you will be able to fix. If, while running your nail of the scratch, it is caught, this is a deep scratch that will require replacement of the entire windshield. Deep scratches will grow over time and no repair kit will stop the inevitable break that will cause the window to fail.
