The new solenoid has a "S" and "I" on it but thats near the small terminals. Nothing on the larger terminals.

Thanks! I will try that and see what happens. Not sure how a solenoid works, does it even matter if they are reversed? [links]

as pictured the positive batt terminal goes on the left of the picture on the right the starter would go to the big right terminal not sure about the yellow red stripe but it would go to the S. On the picture on the left the positive battery terminal goes on the top terminal the black ground goes to the lower left the yellow I think red stripe wire goed to the lower right terminal. the starter wire goes to the lower big terminal here

Large black wire to one large post, large red cable and one small red wire to other large post, 3 small black wires to one small post usally marked -, small yellow wire to small post marked+ is the way most are wired. Large red cable is + from battery, large black cable is + to the starter when engaged, 3 small black wires are ground for the selinoid, switchbox, and recitifier usually. small red wire is + battery to recitifer and ingnition switch. Small yellow is + from the ingnition switch to energise selinoid to start the engine. This is standard for most motors for 1987. JMO

The starter solenoid transfers electricity to the starter motor from the battery when you turn the key in the ignition. If you test your starter solenoid and find that it's bad, you'll need to replace it in order to start the vehicle again. For further instruction on how to replace the starter solenoid in your specific vehicle, it is recommended that you read the service manual for its specific year, make and model. [links]

Adjust the jaws of your adjustable wrench to fit the nut on the large terminal on the left side of the solenoid. Remove the nut. Set the ring terminal of the red battery cable over the terminal and thread the nut onto the terminal. Tighten the nut snugly with an adjustable wrench.

When you need to wire a new solenoid into your Johnson outboard motor's ignition system, hold the solenoid in your hand so that the two small terminals are facing you. The small threaded terminal to the left is for the wire from the starter; the small terminal to the right is for the starter. The large threaded terminal to the left is for the battery; the large threaded connection to the right connects to the starter.
