But, whatever you choose, you’ll want to do a few things before you store your boat for winter inside or outside.

After a long summer of boating fun, it’s time to store away your vessel for the colder months ahead. Unlike your car, a boat has many more exposed parts that can corrode over time, which in turn affects performance and costs hundreds of dollars to repair. The harsh winter weather can further worsen these effects. Thus, it is essential to take care of your boat once you have finished using it in the summer so that you are not treated to the rude surprise of expensive repairs in the spring. Follow this winter boat storage checklist to make sure your boat is properly winterized for storage.

Other options for storing your boat in winter are boat storage units, dry stack storage, and indoor storage. These range in price, availability, and convenience. [links]

Winter boat storage can be tedious and expensive if you don’t have indoor storage, so keeping it on the water or outdoors is tempting. Unfortunately, it can also be problematic. If you store outside in your yard, a boat cover is a must to prevent damage from winter conditions (see all tips below). You’ll want to take extra care if this is the option you choose, a less controlled environment can often bring more challenges.

Leaving your boat in the water is not recommended. The boat is exposed to winter conditions, has a greater possibility of sinking if you aren’t monitoring often, and is vulnerable to theft. more

As always, be sure to read the owner’s manual to learn about any particular needs your boat might have. If you are unsure about implementing these tips, don’t hesitate to call a professional that specializes in winterizing boats. With these precautions, you will be able to protect your boat for the long winter and prepare it for the gorgeous weather that awaits you and your boat afterward.

I realize this is far from an optimal solution and hope someone can share a tip or two to make my live easier. Looking for ideas such as how to build a frame (internal or external to the boat) to drape the plastic over or any similar ideas. here

I am a new boater and have a small (14') aluminum fishing boat. I live in MA and am looking for tips on the best way to store the boat on its trailer to minimize winter damage.

The plastic cover accumulates water when it rains and with enough rain eventually pulls into the boat dumping all the water inside the boat. I then must lift the bow of the boat til the water inside drains out then reset the cover.

It currently is on the trailer wrapped in 6 mil black plastic. The drain plug is removed. The trailer is stored in a level position (thinking I should probably find a safe way to raise the bow to promote better drainage).

A quality boating experience starts with a quality boat, and we’re proud to say that we make industry-leading rigid inflatables — our vessels are military-tough with unparalleled design. Marine professionals and family fun-seekers alike choose our RIBs because they have functionality and performance beyond that of a traditional vessel. They’re virtually unsinkable and statistically proven to be safer, which means peace of mind for however you boat.

For both two-stroke and four-stroke engines, it’s essential to change the oil in the lower unit. Putting in fresh oil before winter removes any excess water left from the year’s use, which can otherwise freeze and cause damage. here

Storing your boat inflated also protects it from nibbling mice in your storage area. When the tubing is left uninflated, it’s an easy target for curious rodents.

I’ve derigged the boat, and the rigger is inside so it’s just the shell outside. The boat cover is on, the shell is wrapped in 2 layers of blankets, and this is all wrapped in layers of serran wrap and duct tape to keep it waterproof. more

So as long as the blankets dont get soaked with water and add a lot of weight I dont see an issue. I am about 200 miles north of you.

My Question Is: Has anyone ever done this, or have any insight into how well this works? Also, will below-freezing temperatures damage boats in general? I really care about this boat, and I’m open to any advice about any additional measures I should take. Thanks! here
