See full version: Is my fuel pump bad or is it a bad primer bulb

I about 5 years ago I bought a 1969 Johnson Model FD-14 SeaKing 18 hp. I bought a brand new fuel tank, fuel line and primer bulb at the same time. The engine would only stay running if I kept priming the bulb. So I bought I new pump, but it look nothing like the original fuel pump. I was told the original pump was no longer available. I also bought a carb kit and installed it. The engine ran pretty good in the tank. I took the boat to the lake for the first time. It would run pretty good and just started to plane out and it would die. no presure in the prime bulb. A boat mechanic told me to adjust the float bowl an open it up a little more. I found a good deal on a Mercury motor with a electric starter, so I parked this motor after on trip to the lake.

Side note. I tried to run this run fuel tank, on a Honda generator for our ice eater during duck season. We never could get it to run all night. The first morning we showed up to hunt, there was ice ball on the outside of primer bulb about the size of a baseball. I figured there was an air leak, so I put liquid gasket on all the connection and tighted it back down.

Well my Mercury motor crapped out last year so I broke out the my Johnson Sea King again last week. I pulled the carb out last week and cleaned it out since it's be sitting again for 5 years. I opened the float bowl up a tight more. Seemed like the needle was sticking a little bit?

I bought an 85 model, DT40 a while back and have slowly been resurrecting it from 3 years of storage. It's on a 16ft runabout. Gone right though everything that needed, or might need doing, (impeller, carb recondition, gear oil, plugs, timing, etc,). I had it on the water for the first time today and it seamed to run ok (nothing spectacular) at low to medium speed, but when I run it full throttle the motor dies after about 2 minutes. It starts again after a fair bit of cranking but the same thing happens again each time I run it at close full throttle.

I ulled the pump and stripped it down but cannot see any obvious problem with the diaphragm. I did notice that one of the metal flapper valves (on th eintake side I think)was not fully closed against the pump body. I'm not sure if this is relevant.

I suspect the fuel pump is not working at full capacity. The last time it stopped I saw that the bowl under the fuel filter was just half full. I disconnected the hose from the pump to the carb and cranked the engine over but no fuel came from the pump until I primed it by squeezing the hand pump on the fuel tank line.

Because your fuel pump is pushing too much fuel into the engine you’ll burn more gas than normal. This means more trips to the gas station to feed your car, truck, or SUV. If you track how much mileage you get between fills and notice a drop, it could be your pump. [links]

If your vehicle’s fuel pump cannot get gas from the tank to the engine, you will have trouble starting your car. The car will struggle to start and run because the pump cannot push enough gas through. A worn pump loses its pressure and the engine is being starved of gasoline.

If your engine is getting gas from the pump, even a lesser amount than needed, it won’t likely stall. It will stall, however, if the pump causes your engine to overheat. An old and worn pump motor may get too hot and this can overheat your entire engine. here

Finally, your vehicle might not start because of the battery, alternator, starter, fuel filter, or the fuel pump. All of these things play a role in getting your vehicle started. If the pump is dead, you won’t be able to get gas into the combustion chamber to start the car.

Your car, truck, or SUV’s fuel pump will last over 100,000 miles on average. Most people never have to have their fuel pumps changed. You can tell if your pump has problems, however. Willoughby Hills Auto Repair lists eight signs you might need a pump replacement.

We’ve talked so far about what happens if the engine doesn’t get enough gas. What happens when it gets too much gas? If the pump is pushing too much fuel into the engine, you’ll notice power surges while you drive, i.e., speed spikes and drops, which…

That’s what we’re here to discuss, in regards to fuel pumps. Follow The Drive’s thorough guide to bad fuel pump symptoms and figure out what the heck is going on with your ride. [links]

A fuel pump’s primary task is to deliver fuel from the storage tank to the engine, and works with multiple other auto parts to accomplish that duty. That can make it difficult to know whether or not it’s failing, unless you know the symptoms of a bad fuel pump.

Realizing the vehicle starts hard, struggles to maintain idle, or flexes less power is the first step in accepting there’s an issue and setting out to fix it. Because so many car parts are interconnected and interdependent, diagnosis is not always a simple exercise. It requires trial and error, and pinpointing the exact source often requires the process of elimination. here

The most important key to diagnosing a car is listening and understanding how it normally works, runs, and acts on a daily basis. What sounds does it make? What rattles? What are its normal RPMs? With this knowledge base, and an attentive mindset, you’ll notice when the vehicle starts running irregularly.

A fuel pump is a mechanically or electrically controlled mechanism that sends fuel from the gas tank through the fuel filter to the fuel rail. From there, fuel is distributed to the injectors and sprayed into each engine cylinder combustion chamber. On older vehicles, the pump sends fuel to a carburetor.
