If you dont have 12v there, you need to trace back to the next thing in line. ( at the moment cant remember if you need the key on.. I think you dont. ) more

First you either need somekind of 12v test light, could be any 12v light with 2 wires or a Multi-Meter. here

Now, the only way to test if it can handle 50amps is to DRAW 50AMPS plus across it, or through it, light a Large Motor, like a Starter motor. ( I dont recommend using your boat starter though ) [links]

Touch the black or neutral probe of the multimeter to the grounded box. Read the voltage on the multimeter. If there is no voltage reading, then the breaker is bad and needs to be replaced. If there is a voltage reading, and the voltage will read either 120 or 220 volts, then the breaker is good and the wiring leading out from the breaker may be compromised. If that is the case, call in an electrician to source out the problem.

Manually test the breaker first. Flip it back and forth, and if it does not stay in the "on" position, the breaker is bad and needs to be replaced. more

Flip the suspect breaker to the "on" position. here

Turn the multimeter on and set it to read voltage. [links]

Touch the red power lead on the multimeter to the screw that feeds power into the breaker. The screw will be connected to the breaker by a black wire.

Home breakers are the lifeline of your household electrical needs. When a breaker trips, power to that particular outlet, light or appliance will no longer be available. If that occurs, you must reset the breaker. However, if the breaker has been reset but there is still no power, there is a problem with either the wiring in the circuit or the circuit breaker itself. The first thing to do is to test the breaker.

Press in the reset button on the side of the breaker. The button is long and rectangular and will normally be flush with the rest of the breaker. When the breaker is tripped however, the button will protrude from the unit.

An electrical breaker stops the flow of electricity in case of an emergency or power short. When the breaker detects that an overload of current is trying to pass through a circuit, it will trip and effectively break the power flow. If no breaker is present, the power overload could damage any equipment being used on that circuit. In large boats, 50 amp breakers are commonly found between the battery and the boat's motors. If a 50 amp manual breaker trips on your boat, you can reset it very quickly. more

Locate the 50 amp manual reset breaker between your battery and boat motor. It will look like a small black box with two wire terminals on top. The box will have power cables running from the battery and to the motor attached to it. here

Start your boat's engine to ensure that proper power has been restored. If the button continues to pop out, there is a short circuit somewhere in your boat's electrical lines and you should consult a mechanic for further help. [links]

The essentials include adequate lighting as a part of your electrical equipment. An insulated flashlight will work, but holding a flashlight in one hand and try to remove a circuit breaker with the other hand can be difficult especially for amateurs. The best lighting option is freestanding lighting that includes a power supply; with the power off, you won’t be able to use any outlets. You can purchase these lights at many hardware stores or electrical supply stores.

Black and red wires are typically “hot” meaning they have electrical current. They carry the electricity from the circuit breaker to the appliance or electrical fixture.
