How to troubleshoot a boat throttle cable
See full version: How to Adjust the Throttle Cable on a Boat
If you're unable to regulate your boat's speed effectively, you can end up in a tight situation quickly. One of the problems with regulating your boat's speed might be loose, ineffective throttle control, sometimes called "slop." If you find that you've got "slop" in your throttle cable, you probably need to adjust the cable so that you have firm control over your boat's throttle setting and speed.

Pull the throttle cable to its attachment point on the throttle. Adjust the cable by moving it until it lines up exactly with the attachment point. here

Inspect the throttle cable and sheath to be sure that the and sheath are anchored securely throughout their length. Sloppiness in the cable may result from the sheath coming loose and flexing, thus limiting the cable travel. Re-anchor the cable and sheath in its proper location if necessary. Use a screwdriver, pliers or a wrench, depending on the type of connection, to disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle. Move the throttle into the neutral position. [links]

This misaligned cable will drop off the “stack” and cause a loud, violent sound as it drops back onto the lower winding. more
Make sure your boat is positioned correctly on the lift. If it’s not far enough forward, it will put excessive weight on the rear cables and the frame structure. The boat is also prone to washing off the lift in a storm from wave action. [links]
If the problem persists, call your lift dealer. more

We are located in the center of the Door County Peninsula at 7325 St. Hwy 42/57. That’s 1 mile North of County MM (Hwy 42) and 3 miles South of Sturgeon Bay. Look for the Idlewild Road intersection.

No it moves when I disconnect. Ive even tried to adjust it. The cable moves slightly when connected just not enough. If I manually open it at the motor I can use the handle to close it just fine however when I go to use the handle to open it again it only opens about a quarter of the way [links]

In the video it looks as if the throttle on the engine is just fine and that the cable is froze. Is your cable frozen or does it move when disconnected from the engine? here

It's difficult but the lever at the shifter moves. Now the cable is just kind of laying about. Itworked fine when I got the boat. Is there a special way the cable should be run. I mean it seems too long. I've seen videos on u tube of what's mine is doing just not the fix.

If you take the throttle cable off of the motor and pull back and forth on it, what happens ??

Normally neutral is when the shift slider is about in the middle of it's travel. Throttle handle is at 12 o'clock, shift slider is on the middle of the travel, and prop spins both ways easily. here

I've verified the throttle does not move until the shift placement is fully in gear, but I still can't achieve WOT. At max according to the control box handle, I can still manually move the carbs open another 25% to WOT, but I'm afraid if I move the throttle cable adjustment barrell all the way to the end of the threading on the cable, I'm starting to move the distributor into the advanced timing.
