The Tohatsu/Nissan/Mercury engine is the same except for the carburetor. The jets are fixed and cannot be replaced, but switching the carb from one to another does change the deliverable hp. In theory it also is against the law.
You have to be specific on this question, Bob.<br /><br />In general it would cost more to upgrade the power rating on identical blocks than it would to buy the larger engine, but there are exceptions.

Johnson and Suzuki are definately not the same, Evenrude and Johnson are the same, If suzuki was anything like Johnson it would have made my life so much easyer.
Where Yamaha engines deliver 37 knots, Suzuki marine motors are able to take it up to 40. So, even though Yamaha is the topmost outboard engine manufacturer, Suzuki is the winner here. here

This kit converts 4hp 4-Stroke Suzuki outboards (Model Years 2005 to 2011) to 6hp. It includes the 6hp carburetor as well is the higher pitch (7" pitch, 10 tooth spline) propeller needed to take advantage of the extra horsepower.
