Remove the bottom of the dashboard and look for where the wire harness is. You should see a bundle of wires coming from out of the firewall near the steering column. Probe these wires with a multimeter to find a wire that has power to it without the key being turned on. These wires will usually have the same colors, but some manufacturers are different. [links]

Your voltmeter should be located in a place where you can see it easily without having to take your eyes too far away from the road. Above the dash, on the left-hand side, near the corner of the windshield is a good place. Of course, you can place the voltmeter under the dashboard on the right-hand side as well.

There are two connections at the back of the voltmeter where you will make your connections. Use the 16 gauge wire and strip back the end of the wire. Make sure you place the correct wire on the positive and negative poles on the voltmeter. here

A voltmeter is a great accessory that will help you determine how well your car's battery and alternator are working. The voltmeter will be able to tell you how the alternator is operating in conjunction with keeping the battery charged. Keeping an eye on the voltmeter in your car will tell you whether or not the alternator is bad. When the alternator is good the battery will remain at a constant 12V rating. The opposite also means that the alternator is bad. If the voltmeter shows that the amps is up to around 16 or more, it means that the alternator is not regulating the power well and needs to be replaced. Here are the steps to take to wire a voltmeter for your car.

Use one of the wires that you found in the wiring harness and cut it between the steering column and connector in the dash. Connect the end coming from the steering column to the voltmeter. Take the piece of 16 gauge wire and complete the circuit by connecting it to the connector wire. Use a wire nut to make the connection. [links]

Unscrew the ground terminal screw on the nearest instrument. Connect the spade terminal to the ground terminal of the adjacent instrument and tighten the screw.

Cut a hole the size of the body of the voltmeter in the boat's dash, using a hole saw. Sand the edges of the hole with sandpaper to smooth the voltmeter's entry into the dashboard. more

A voltmeter allows you to keep track of the amount of electricity flowing through your boat's electrical system. If your boat's entire DC electrical system operates at the same voltage, whether it is 12VDC, 24VDC or 48VDC, you can install the voltmeter anywhere in the boat's electrical system. Mixed systems -- part of the electrical system is 12VDC and part is 48VDC -- require a voltmeter for each system. A voltmeter on the boat's dash lets you track the boat battery's performance.

Typically voltmeter gage has usually three contacts. One for ground, second for positive typically wire from ignition harness, and a third for light bulb inside for night operation. I'm not sure what the designations on your mean, mine has - ground and + polarity labeled on the backside.

Hello forum,
I have a 1986 125hp Force that I am going through the dash wiring on. I got the overheat alarm working and am now having trouble with the volt meter. Mine has a ground post, a "P" post (positive 12V I assume) and a "S" post (I assume send or signal?) Post "P" I am hooking up to a keyed 12V sorce, the ground goes to a good ground, my question is were does the "S" wire go to? more

Since you do not want the volmeter to be always on, make sure your positive contact comes from ignition wire. In other words it only should turn on when you have the ignition key in "on" position. here
