1 Star Lack of quality control
I purchased the Humminbird 580 from Amazon and the NAVIONICS SD card for my region. When I received the Humminbird I opened the SD card slot panel and found out the card slot was never installed on the circuit board. I called Humminbird to confirm this model should have the card slot; then I called Amazon and after 15 minutes of explaining what the problem was to a person that had absolutely no technical background a new Humminbird 580 was on the way. Guess what? Your right, the replacement Humminbird was also missing the SD card slot. The serial numbers for the two were 26 unit apart. So I returned both to Amazon and received a prompt refund. Other then the problem communicating with the Amazon help line I am zero dollars out, Amazon paid for all the postage so thanks Amazon for taking care of a lousy product coming from Humminbird.
5 Stars Humminbird 580 combo
It is an excellent value. Screen is sharp, easy to see in daylight or at night.
5 Stars Powerful combo gps/fishfinder
I received my Humminbird 580 approximately 10 days ago and have mounted it in a Humminbird PTC U Portable Case Conversion Kit. The portable case has a 12V rechargeable battery and everything fits nicely. Once up and running I discovered the GPS portion of this combo unit was not working. I sent Amazon an email of my problem and in less than 24 hours I had a new unit which works great. Amazon customer support is second to none! The unit has an accessory wire from the GPS antenna cable which can be hard-wired to a serial connector allowing for data logging on a personal computer. This will allow GPS and depth data to be collected for bathymetry. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the display and ease of use of the unit. The documentation for the unit (manual and online) is only marginal and does not provide much detail. I have also not yet heard from Humminbird customer support but they note this is their busiest time of year. Altogether this is an excellent unit made all the better by Amazon’s customer support. here
The 580 combo has a high resolution 16 level grayscale display that also features contrast enhancement for easy readability in any lighting conditions. The built-in UniMap of the USA inland lakes, rivers and coastal areas at 30 meters per pixel resolution provides charts virtually anywhere you fish. Get information on depth contours, spot soundings, markers, buoys and more with optional Navionics Gold, HotMaps and HotMaps Premium charts. Comes with DualBeam PLUS sonar gives you exceptional coverage of both the bottom and the fish suspended below your boat.
Low frequencies penetrate water better than high frequencies. Fish finders with very low-frequency transducers can “see” through the water better, allowing them greater depth.
Target separation is simply a measure of how precise the fish finder’s sonar is at distinguishing individual fish from one another. Smaller numbers mean better performance. here
Frequencies: Dual Spectrum CHIRP, MEGA Down Imaging+, MEGA Side Imaging+; Full Mode (28-75 kHz), Narrow Mode (75-155 kHz), Optional Deepwater (28-250 kHz), Wide Mode (130-250 kHz
That’s a serious claim that you can test yourself:
But with a startling array of fish finders on offer, which one is the right pick for you?
2 or more waypoints linked together are known as a route. Routes are used to plan a trip or a navigation path. A route represents your intended navigation path and will indicate the shortest path between each waypoint. You can store up to 50 Routes which can each in turn contain up to 50 Waypoints.
Tracks contain detailed position history which are displayed as a breadcrumb trail of trackpoints. The Current Track shows the position history from the when the fishfinder was switched on. A maximum of 20,000 trackpoints are displayed. You can save these trackpoints, or clear then whenever you wish. Up to 50 saved tracks can be stored all of which can contain up to 20,000 trackpoints.
Take a closer look at fish, structure and underwater contours by pressing any arrow key on the keypad to instantly freeze the display. Zoom in and mark waypoints on the traditional sonar view. [links]
I would consider the Humminbird 788ci to be in the mid to high range bracket of fish finders. It is packed with power and features that make it a fishfinder for the more serious boat angler. As well as having standard dual beam sonar coverage at 200 kHz (25°) and 455 kHz (16°) the 788ci features the more powerful down imaging sonar. The down imaging sonar ranges are 455 kHz (75°) and 800 kHz (45°) giving the 788ci a massive range of sonar coverage to ensure nothing is missed while scanning the waterway.
Having an excellent clear high definition display makes the 788ci much easier to view your watercraft with a 5.0″ (diagonal) 256 color TFT screen. The pixel definition at 640×640 adds to the overall clarity of the display.
The split screen zoom allows you to zoom in on a particular area of your sonar returns. Not only does it zoom in on an area, but it changes the resolution of the zoomed area for clear detail. The full view is retained on the left side of the screen with the zoom portion on the right. more
better check it out"! Sure enough, that's the model we have! And I sure appreciated the download for the owner's manual. Would you mind telling me what your mounting bracket and transducer cable numbers are so I can start looking for a replacement? OR is this depthfinder even worth fixing up? Thanks in advace

Find a menu option to reset defaults, if it has one. What model is it? more
