We often get the question, “how do I adjust the idle speed on my Suzuki outboard engine?”. This article discusses idle speed checking and adjustment procedures for the Suzuki DF 40 50 60 70 horsepower outboard engine. It’s highly recommended to always have a Suzuki outboard repair manual present before making adjustments to the boat motor’s idle speed. Critical specifications and factory adjustment procedures are listed in the manual.

If the outboard’s idle speed is not within the factory specifications listed above, follow these idle adjustment procedures.

The following idle speed adjustment procedures apply to the 1999 thru 2011 Suzuki 40 thru 50 HP outboard engines (DF40 DF40T DF50 DF50T).

Any leaks (air leaks) in fuel lines, or connectors. Check filter housing for cracks, those plastic filters can leak? more

Yes, it would be helpful to check fuel pressure at rail, however, I feel if the regulator and hp pump are working at/up to 5k rpms, I think it is a restriction of flow at WOT. here

Several things you haven't mentioned.

First, when replacing diaphram in fuel pump, did you inspect those clear disc check-valves (if broken -replace pump, also if broken, pieces may be restricting fuel on back-side of needle valve seat)? This can limit supply of fuel to vst. Yes the check valves are both mint. I inspected the needle valve previously and when i changed to a new needle valve (and needle valve seal) I also setup the float (it did appear to not be opening as much as it could). The needle valve/float are working correctly and it opens fully and shut off when float is at the top. here

As a result of running your outboard with a double-oil mixture, it is normal for your engine to emit more exhaust smoke than normal. You may also notice oil coming from the around the prop and/or from the exhaust relief port hole (located near the top of the lower unit) during this period. This is completely normal and you should see this excess oil eliminated once you finish your break-in period and resume the normal 50:1 oil/fuel mixture.

note: This outboard is equipped with an Engine Oil Warning Lamp. When the warning lamp is off, it indicates that sufficient oil pressure is present. If the warning lamp is on (red light is on) or blinking on and off, immediately shut down your outboard and check the oil level. Replenish as needed. If oil level is at the appropriate levels, consult your Tohatsu dealer for assistance. Never run your outboard if the warning lamp is on or blinking on/off. [links]

Another feature that’s been added, top to bottom in the E-TEC G2 line, is that the engines are now available with a white exoskeleton, to color match more boats out there.

First, the injector is actually in the cylinder head and not in the intake manifold like it is in 4-stroke engines. Because of that position, the Evinrude employs a more robust injector that that can spray in fuel at up to 800 psi, compared to just 35 psi for 4-stroke engines in class. The Evinrude injector works with the refinement of a stereo speaker, pulsing up to 100 times a second. more

Because it’s built with an all-new two-stroke, 3-cylinder powerhead, this outboard weighs in at just 390 pounds. There aren’t many outboards in this segment, and some weigh about the same, while others are nearly 80 pounds heavier while offering lower horsepower.

Evinrude uses an Ultra-HPF gear fluid, which can continue to lubricate even if it’s contaminated by up to 25 percent of its volume with water. [links]

The straight leading edge is designed to shed weeds. Anodes are placed prominently throughout, and the anti-ventilation plate has been shortened and positioned further aft to permit better water flow around the prop and still stop ventilation in rough conditions. Evinrude tells us that in normal conditions this allows the boat to stay on plane at lower speeds. [links]

Repower has provided repower buyers with the ability to use the new engines with other manufacturers’ pre-existing steering to keep costs down. Namely, the outboard has a through-tube tilt tube for use with anti-feedback cable steering. It can also be used with bolt-on external hydraulic steering. [links]
