Sometimes it’s not possible or desirable to work with your crowfoot wrench at a 90-degree angle to the wrench handle. In situations like this, you can still accurately measure torque. In fact, if you do a calculation based on the new total length of the torque wrench and crowfoot wrench combined, you‘ll be able to accurately measure torque with the crowfoot wrench in any position. C – Change in length caused by the crowfoot wrench. Measure from the center of the fastener to the center of the square drive tang on the torque wrench. Measure in a line parallel to the body of the wrench. If the position of the crowfoot wrench decreases the effective length of the torque wrench, creating a negative change, then input this amount into the equation as a negative number.

L – Effective length of the torque wrench. Measure from the center of the square drive tang to the groove in the knurled handle grip on Tekton torque wrenches (check manufacturer recommendations for other brands of torque wrenches and use the center of the handle grip if the manufacturer does not recommend a location). First, set the torque wrench to the torque spec for the fastener (T1) and then measure in a straight line parallel to the body of the wrench. [links]

Essentially, torque represents the force that is applied to a lever multiplied by its distance from the lever's fulcrum. The Greek letter tau (τ) is used as the symbol for torque. [links]
