yes, welcome steelhead79 <br /><br />I second Bob's post .. a couple scraps of plywood or aluminum sheet cut-offs for backing work great.<br /><br />I'll add fender washers, nylon lock nuts and a shot of silcone sealant to aid in keeping water from sneaking through the holes too .. don't need much of it.<br /><br />good luck

I think I saw wood when I replaced the anchor light (the one with a extensible pole near the transom corner). In fact, now I have to re-check to see if I sealed or not. I dont remember, but now I am worried. [links]
Re: To drill or not to drill? Rod Holders Installation
Mumblerone<br />Rod holders I was talking about either mount inside or on deck but the rod in holder above deck. I like the 241 mount as can be mounted on a deck with 4 screw holes or inside the way I did mine or even a rail mount.<br /> http://www.scotty.com/powerlock.htm <br /> http://www.scotty.com/striker_rod_holder.htm <br /> http://www.scotty.com/rod_mounts.htm

Flush-mount rod holders are made from materials ranging from plastic to stainless steel, and they are available with angles from 0 to 60 degrees. Do some research online and at fishing stores to determine which material and angle best suit your budget, boat and style of fishing.
5 – Finally, you need to weatherproof all the holes with either resin or silicone sealant. To do this, you need to remove the rod holder. Apply the sealant to the inside edge of the tube hole and into the bolt holes, and then reinsert the rod holder and tighten the mounting bolts.
Fishermen tend to have more rod-and-reel gear than they have hands, so conventional fishing wisdom might suggest that you can never have too many rod holders. Like most things fishing related, that may be exaggerated, but a rod holder will allow you to convert your boat from a fishing machine to a cooking station and back. Here’s how you can choose and install a flush-mount rod holder for your fishing and/or cooking needs.
For you boating fishermen, I'd love some advice for the best way to mount a rod holder on my vintage Boston Whaler without having to drill into the fiberglass. It's been refurbished and I really love how clean and simple it is. The thought of bolting extras to her makes me cringe.
There are no cleats or rails either, so that's out. Really strong suction cups or something?
If your looking for smaller fish there are many ideas out there, such as the one listed already. If you are looking for sea monsters out in the deep as I do (big tuna) then you are risking losing your gear all together. Just two of us fish so we leave the rod in the holder for some time while we bring in other lines and prep the deck for the fight. Just be sure what you use will hold up to what you are searching for and may find by accident. Also they do sell clamp on bases for rod holders, just have to have a place to clamp on to.
