I have kept sunfish and know of other people who keep sunfish as pets. I would not use anything smaller than a 28 gal. The larger the better especially if you plan on keeping more than one, even for little ones because they grow quite large. In my tank I I have several rocks piled into 2 little caves where they like to hide/sleep. They eat smaller sinking pellets (it takes them a couple of days to get used to it and you can feed them small minnows or worms or insects that you find as a treat). If you plan on giving them any friends, (Algae eaters etc.) you should make sure they are too big for the fish to eat because they will try to eat anything that fits in their mouth. here

Ignore the prude that said you should not try to domesticate animals etc. etc. They obviously do not realize that almost all salt water fish come from the wild as do many of the harder to breed fresh water species. here

different water conditions probably shocked their system and killed them.

My roomates and I put a small 8"+/- bass in an aquarium for a while it was great fun to watch him devour crappie minnows almost every 10 mins or so.it was interesting to see the minnows would bunch up when he was about to feed, like they sensed impending doom!we could never figure out what they noticed about its behavior to make them nervous.after feeding on a few,the minnows would swim all over the tank and right in front of him safely.also if he wounded or killed one w/out swallowing it he would not eat it even if it was still struggeling before it expired.we had to constantly remove dead minnows from the tank till we got a crayfish.but he ate him too not long after they were introduced!we released him because we were going broke buying minnows on our measily budgets!
