Daniel Craig has certainly picked up the mantle and sports a Seamaster Planet Ocean ($4,500). This watch has a black face and matching bezel. It’s chunkier than ever before, coming in with a case of 42mm in stainless steel. The bracelet is also the same material and the trademark sapphire crystal protects the face. Again, automatic movements power the watch. [links]

Next, we see Pierce Brosnan’s Bond wearing a Seamaster 300m ($3,500). This blue face watch has a matching bezel. The case is 42mm of stainless steel with a rubber wristband. The crystal dome protecting the face is sapphire. Inside, it’s powered by automatic movement. As you can tell by the name, it’s waterproof and perfect for any diving fans (or secret agents). His had a tan leather strap in the movie, which did add an air of expensive design to it. Later on, in Goldfinger, you might notice he opts for a NATO strap instead. Real buffs can’t get over the fact that the fabric strap seems quite ill-fitting. more

Bond certainly exudes style and class. He has a taste for the finer things in life – and his timepieces are no exception. Let’s take a look at some of the watches James Bond has made iconic.

Firstly, The Submariner (circa $9,000) was the watch of choice. It has a 40mm case made of stainless steel, as is the bracelet, and the dome is made of sapphire crystal to resist wear and tear. The hands and markers are luminous for readability in low light. It has automatic movement on the inside.

By the time the film came out in 1962, the Submariner already had a reputation for being rugged and stylish – great for not attracting too much attention.

The past catches up with Bond in SKYFALL, a film suffused with meditations on mortality and plenty of action. 007 relies on a Planet Ocean 600M and a somewhat dressier Aqua Terra, both powered by OMEGA Co-Axial calibres.

The Reference 5513 Sub is again the watch of choice for 007, but doesn’t feature any gadgets this time.

This was Roger Moore’s last film as James Bond and he wore four different watches. The first was the Seiko SPR007 7A28-7020, a white-dialled quartz chronograph seen at the start of the film. The second watch was a Seiko H558-500 SPW001 Dive Watch and can be seen briefly when Bond is chasing someone up the Eiffel Tower. The third Seiko was 6923-8080 SPD09, a two-tone watch, which is seen for the briefest of times underneath Bond’s shirt cuff. A Rolex Datejust is seen on Bond’s wrist when he finds his driver dead. here

Australian George Lazenby was next to play 007, after Connery finished You Only Live Twice. Lazenby has the distinction of being the first Bond to wear a Submariner on an Oyster bracelet. He wore a Rolex Submariner Reference 5513, but during the scene where he has to break into an office to open a safe and copy some documents, he takes a reference 6358 off his wrist and puts it on the machine with the crown unscrewed. Later in the film he is sporting a Reference 6238 Chronograph also on stainless steel bracelet.

The watch was on the wrist of 007 again in the next film, From Russia With Love, on the leather strap.

While Rolex is a household name, Gruen is certainly less known, and yet, it’s actually the first watch James Bond is ever seen wearing on camera. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the Gruen Watch Company was a successful American company, started by German watchmaker Dietrich Grün. In 1958, just a few years before the first Bond film, the firm was sold off and the Gruen Watch Company ceased to exist (in the 2000s, a new company bought the firm and started producing watches under the Gruen name again).

Rolex’s Submariner line of watches came into being in the 1950s when the company sought to create a diver’s “sports” watch that could pass as a dress watch. It was almost as if they created a line of watches specifically for James Bond. See Rolex Submariner on Bob’s Watches. more

Moore wore the Rolex for one more film before switching over to Seiko for good, starting with 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me . For five straight films, James Bond could be seen sporting a variety of Seiko wristwatches and chronographs, including three different watches in Moore’s final outing, 1985’s A View to a Kill . here

In Dalton’s second and final appearance as Bond, the super spy returned to his trusty Rolex Submariner, this time a 16610. The 16610 was still in production as recently as 2010 , but like Dalton and the other actors who have played the character, newer, fresher faces have come to take its place. [links]
