Well, I pulled the lower unit and ran the drill test. It would pump for a little bit, then stop. A little bit more, then stop. So I assume the pump is bad. Pulled the impeller housing apart and noticed that the bottom plate had some pretty good grooves worn into it. Put a kit in it with the plate, grommet, and impeller. Put the housing back together, and drill tested in the barrel again. This time it seemed to pump continuously. Rebolted up the lower unit, put the motor in the barrel, and fired it up. Water sprayed flawlessly. Success. Thanks for the input I was looking for guys. more
You can remove the lower unit and submerge it in a barrel of water, spin the driveshaft with a drill and check your water pump that way. here
