Coat the outer surface of the new propeller shaft seal with a light dusting of spray penetrating lubricant. Use a shouldered bearing driver that only contacts the seal around the exposed set of the bearing's lips to install the seal into the bearing carrier, so that the the set of lips with the larger outer diameter faces inward toward the rear of the carrier. here

Every time you go boating where people fish, you're taking a chance on running over a piece of fishing line that someone threw over the side of a boat or from shore. Fishing line that casually wraps itself your Johnson outboard's propeller shaft behind the propeller destroys the prop seal. That lets water into your motor's lower unit. When water in your lower unit dilutes the gear lubricant, your gears start grinding each other down.

1990 Johnson 200. I'm seeing gear lube dribbling down the skeg, so there's gotta' be a bad seal. I'd normally do the work myself but don't really have time right now, so I'm wondering what a dealer might charge for replacing the seals in the lower unit.

When I tilted the motor up a small amount of milky oil came out of a weep hole above the AV plate, so it's looking like either the drive shaft seal or shift rod seal. But if that's the case I'm wondering how oil got down to where it was leaking out around the front of the prop. [links]

I spotted something similar to this on another thread when I was using the search function. [links]

I read that thread and picked up on a vague recommend for the lisle tool. more

Found a "seal puller" from HF, not sure if it is similar or would do the trick?

Does anyone have a picture of what the OMC prop shaft seal puller looks like?

I think making one of these is a beyond my skills and shop tools. The hold tapered barbed thread thing throws me off. I sent an email to Meyer maybe a long shot they still have some on the shelf.
I bet Frank could turn out a dozen of these before lunch tomorrow.

I got a mechanic to replace my seal on a 70 and it wasn't very expensive.

I filled the lower unit with oil. about 31 ounces so it was empty. I can't imagine that it was running fine without oil, but. I will start it up soon and would prefer a real water test--not muffins--but the weathers been yuck and time isn't on my side. The good news, I suppose, is that after I filled the gear case (haven't run it) there is no sign of leakage and it's been about a week. Then again, there hasn't been any pressure.

Shouldn't be to hard, you can buy a seal remover (its been awhile, but $15 or so) or if your careful you can use a screw driver, use it as a pry bar between the rubber of the seal and prop shaft, push down a little at a time and work it around the inside of the seal. If you use your engine in salt water take your time and go around several times. If you use a seal remover tool be careful again the edges are VERY sharp and can cut yourself or put a hole in the metal part of the seal, no big deal about the hole just keep trying, be genital. What I've done is file the edges flat on the seal remover, this helps to stop putting holes in the seals metal outer rim and makes it a bit easier to remove it. Be careful no to damage the the surrounding aluminum.

Hey guys, trying to replace the propeller shaft seal on my 1976 johnson 9.9 (10E76G). I cannot remove the bearing housing as use in salt water seems to have it frozen in. Leeroys Ramblings mentions using a puller or slide hammer with a screw on the end to screw into the seal and tap with a hammer to get it moving but I cannot find any type of puller like this. Is there any other way to get these seals out without going to a pro to have the bearing housing pulled as I am at least 2 hours away from a marine mechanic. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated

You might be able to destroy them with a chisel or screwdriver, enough to bend them and get them out. Be careful not to chew up the seal seating arrangement too much. You may also try a small drill through the seal and pulling it out with a metal hook. No doubt, they're a bit$%#!
