I pulled out my mower (Honda HRR216PKA) to do a quick mow of the front and sides of the lawn. I went ahead and put it back in the garage and just before heading into the house I decided to top it off since it's been a few weeks since I filled it up (I usually fill up the gas after I mow). In the process of filling up the lawn mower, a buddy of mine stopped over and we got to talking. After we talked about 10-15 minutes, I went inside not knowing that I left the gas cap open. Yesterday after I took the wife's car out I noticed that I left the cap open and went ahead and put it back on. more

My question is: should I be worried about starting the engine after having the cap open / exposing the gasoline to airborne dust and other debris. I keep the garage relativity clean but there is dust/dirt like any garage floating around. Should I pour out the gasoline into a plastic container? I have not started the engine since. Next weekend I'll most likely need to fire it up to do the lawn again. Thanks for your help!

You can use something that fits loosely over the cap to prevent water from getting in. If it's likely to blow away, tape it to the tank on one side. more

Yup, it can. Not much will get in that vent, but some can. I keep my fuel tank in my garage, but that's not practical for a moored boat.

Open up the fuel door, and in some newer vehicles there might not be a gas cap at all. Don't panic. While leaving the gas cap off a car that is supposed to have a gas cap might cause issues, this entire discussion doesn't apply to those vehicles that don't have one to start with. Many Ford and some GM products, among others, have capless systems. They look a bit different; see below. [links]

If your gas filler neck looks like this, you don't have to worry about this issue. Everyone else, read on. [links]

What happens if my gas cap is left off? Why does it cause the check engine light to come on? Have I done some damage to the engine? These are very common questions, and luckily there's an easy fix and no lasting damage. more

Let's explore these concerns. But first, a question that will seem silly at first.

I would buy an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) gas cap because it will always thread correctly into the filler neck, the seal will seal properly, the proper vent valves will be in place and the cap will be designed specifically for your vehicle's fuel system. Deviate from OEM design and you are asking for trouble. To be safe, call your local vehicle dealer and ask for the part number, and either buy it from a reputable online parts store or from the dealer parts department. [links]

From what I read online people have done this accidentally too, but for much longer periods(day or days). Advice goes from don't worry about it since there is small portion of water in the gas tank already and not much could really get in to just throw in HEET, but I also read that too much HEET could burn a valve. I was confused on when exactly to add HEET if I did use it, if next fillup after being empty or use immediately. here

Never done this before, but I accidentally left my the gas cap off my truck after filling it all the way up at a gas station. Drove about 30 minutes to my destination and the car sat for about 4 and a half hours until I came and found the gas cap off, but the gas door closed. Not sure if I closed it when I left the gas station or if it somehow slammed close from freeway wind. I think I might have closed it leaving the gas station just somehow left the gas cap hanging.
