Also incidentally, if you remember Nadine, you’re probably wondering how the movie producers could possibly have picked Lady M, a good deal shorter than Nadine: 147 vs. 167 feet, respectively. To that, I say: When is the last time any Hollywood star was cast to play someone his or her true age? That’s filmmaking, kids. [links]

Well, to be fair, The Wolf of Wall Street, hitting theaters in November, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, and more Hollywood superstars. But to those of us in the yachting world, the real star of The Wolf of Wall Street is the megayacht Lady M. She plays the role of a well-known yacht from the 1990s, Nadine, and appears a few times in the film. Nadine was owned by Jordan Belfort, a Wall Street stockbroker in the ’90s who had a penchant for living life to excess. (Belfort once gave an interview in which he said one of his role models was the fictional character Gordon Gekko.) Belfort was nicknamed the “Wolf of Wall Street” and wrote an autobiography by the same title, which is the basis for the movie.

While you can see a few scenes with Lady M in the official movie trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street, this video shows a lot more of her. It appears to have been shot by someone affiliated with the film, due to how close he was and how much footage he obtained when Lady M was at New York City’s North Cove Marina last fall. On a side note, Luiz de Basto, who designed the megayacht (built by Intermarine in 2002), says that the producers of The Wolf of Wall Street contacted him last year. The reason: “to ask for the plans of the boat so they could plan the camera placement for the scenes,” he explains.

The last few Scorsese pics left me a little disappointed. I had begun to think Marty had become a ‘gun for hire’ and that his brilliance may have been spent (his earlier works were some of the best movies ever made). I attended a screening of The Wolf of Wall Street this evening, and was expecting to be unimpressed. I am happy to say I was completely blown away. This pic is Marty at his best. I laughed, I cringed, I related (with fond memories as well as a bit of guilt) and I TOTALLY believed every unbelievable moment. A good book, a great screenplay and a delightful cast were formed and molded into what I believe should get Scorsese a best director Oscar, and likely a Best Picture Award for the movie. Leo DiCaprio has grown into a versatile actor and his creation of this super hero dirtbag’s roller coaster ride in this crazy (true) story is really honest and delightfully entertaining. Jonah Hill pulled out all the stops too and this is definitely his best work. Thank you Mr. Scorsese for delivering the goods so brilliantly! here

But if you want to retrace DiCaprio's ostentatious footsteps -- without the near-death experience -- you can now charter the yacht, which will tour the Bahamas from April.

In the real world, Nadine sank in 1997 after Belfort ordered the captain to sail her into a storm off the coast of Italy, while supposedly high on drugs.

"To get the best aerial shots you need a good pilot, it's very important. The more they understand the shot I'm after and know how to maneuver the helicopter, that really helps," he says.

The yacht was battered by 15m waves and sank along with a number of toys including a seaplane, helicopter and eight jet skis however all passengers were successfully rescued by the Italian Coast Guard.

Belfort set up boiler room Stratton Oakmont in the 1990’s and enjoyed an outrageously excessive lifestyle of drugs, women, planes and of course superyachts before being imprisoned for 22 months corruption and fraud. LADY M is used in the film to represent Belfort’s own superyacht ‘NADINE’, named after his second wife, which was a 41m luxury motor yacht originally built for Coco Chanel in 1961. here
