Kind of an odd ship and the only one of her class in the fleet. However sister cruise line Costa Cruises does have an identical class ship. Carnival Splendor was built at the Fincantieri Genoa shipyard and sailed her maiden cruise on July 2, 2008.

And we come to the oldest ship in the fleet which entered service in 1990 and kicked off a new era for Carnival Cruise Line with a new class of ships and the first new-build for the Miami-based cruise line. Carnival Fantasy might not be the largest in the fleet but still can offer a just as good experience as in her heyday. The ship has ten passenger decks and costs $225 million to construct in Finland. Boarding a ship called the Household Chores or the Boredom wouldn't exactly put any cruisers in a vacation kind of mood. That's why Carnival gives its ships names that are associated with positivity, joy and relaxation. It has more than two dozen ships in its fleet. They travel the world, transporting passengers to destinations including Australia, the Mediterranean and Cuba. Booking a Carnival cruise? Whichever ship is assigned to your itinerary is guaranteed to have a name that puts you in the mood for fun.

The name of your ship can provide some clues about the type of experience you'll have on board. Those in the Spirit, Triumph and Fantasy classes are Carnival's oldest and smallest ships but are routinely updated to provide guests with plenty of modern conveniences and activities. Not all ships are created equal, though. For one thing, Carnival's newer ships – Dream, Magic, Breeze, Vista, Horizon and Panorama – are all able to accommodate more than 3,600 passengers. Most of the other ships in the fleet accommodate fewer than 3,000 people at once. In addition to larger crowds, the newer ships are known for their inventive, one-of-a-kind attractions like the SkyRide, a kind of bike ride that's suspended in the air over the ship's top deck. Newer ships also have features including IMAX theaters and elevated ropes courses.

Of the other ships in the fleet, some of their names are synonymous with success in some way (Triumph, Victory, Conquest, Glory), while others evoke festive vacation vibes (Breeze, Sunshine, Dream). The newest ships in Carnival's fleet, part of the Vista class, all have names that reference the views from the ship: Vista, Panorama and Horizon. [links]
