But, we had a similar symptom on our 93 Grand Cherokee and it turned out to be the IAC (Idle Air Control) unit. The old one was very dirty/sticky and even a good cleaning didn't eliminate the problem. It helped, just didn't cure it. Put a new one in and cleaned everything I could think of in and around it. Worked. here
For the last few months, my truck has been stalling when shifting it into reverse from drive. If I go to say, parallel park, within a second or two of changing gears from drive to reverse, the RPMs drop significantly and then it stalls. If I gas it quickly enough when it's safe to do so, the RPMs recover and then I can proceed but usually that isn't possible. Now, once it stalls, I put it in park and it starts back up just fine and then when I put it into reverse from there, I don't have any issues. Also, if I'm just getting in and need to back out of a parking spot, I again have no issues (going from park to reverse). Honestly (and yes, this was probably pretty stupid) I haven't been all that concerned about it. It's a nuisance but that WAS about the extent of my worry. Fast forward a few months.
I'm new (just posted my intro in "New Member" section) and I am in need of some advise/guidance.
I apologize for the long winded post and I'd greatly appreciate any/all suggestions and thoughts you all can offer.
I brought the truck down to a shop Wednesday last week for my inspection, front brakes/rotors and a major issue with the front suspension. I was pretty sure it was the idler arm (hitting a bump or bad pavement at higher speeds threw the entire front end into mass chaos. felt like the wheels were going in two different directions. scary and dangerous - another story for a different day). Anyway, mechanic experienced the stalling which I had totally forgotten to mention given the pressing issues and he proceeded to tell me it was more than likely my transmission is going out. So, if your still with me, here's my question/dilemma.
"Well Mr. tenspeed starts up some really brilliantly ridiculous stuff, as usual, and I then shut down the entire conversation, and yes tenspeed I am referring to you pal, you are a funny man, the way to stop the madness is to tell the question asker just what they have to do to resolve their issue, sometimes it's really simple, like get off this site and take your broken car to a mechanic.. period." --- I said that I didn't know if it was a knock sensor or the throttle position sensor. I said that I thought the needles jumping might have something to do with the problem. You said at the time that you liked my thinking. Then you write this. FO Gary. You suck.
When you 'back up' I take that to mean. as opposed to "drive in reverse". Your '03 Focus has rear drum/shoe brakes and they are self adjusting, and if you have a habit of when you back up, out of your driveway of anywhere else and always turn the same direction. one rear wheel is traveling a further distance that the other everytime, the self [links]
adjusting star wheel will over tighten the brakes on that side and when you drive on ahead, it will drag or be locked up entirely
How far do you want to go in reverse? More than a car length or 2? [links]
something is really odd here.
If it seems like only one wheel is locking up, and the other is attempting to turn or does turn, then it may be possible that the CV axle is bad. Perhaps a worn or damaged joint that can no longer rotate properly. It may also be possible that the transmission itself is worn out due to regular wear and tear and may need to be rebuilt or serviced.
Hello. If your transmission is no longer going in reverse, then there is likely an issue with the transmission. It may be possible that one of the shift solenoids or sensors that controls the shifting of the transmission has failed and is causing the issue. [links]
car wont reverse it only drives forward when I try to reverse the wheels lock up and its on my front driver side my transmission fluid is good so im not sure why my car is doing this I was told it could be a bad cv axle
My car has 275000 miles.

I recommend having a certified mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine why your car will not shift properly and suggest any needed repairs.
