BulletShield is not window film, but rather a clear polycarbonate security shield that’s mounted over existing window and glass doors, providing a bullet-resistant, impenetrable layer of clear glass protection.

Standard Car Doors do NOT stop bullets. In fact a small 22 caliber round will pass through a normal car door without much of a problem. If you shoot the car with high calibers the bullets don’t hardly even slow down, let alone stop. more

Laminated polycarbonate is made by layering polycarbonate, a heavy-duty clear plastic, between two sheets of glass and laminating it all together. It can be ¾”, 1” or 1-1/4” thick depending on the level of protection.

Bulletproofing car Windows and the Windshield. Standard cars aren’t equipped from the manufacturer with bullet proof windows, and the quickest way to get any car to stop is to shoot the driver through any window you can. Auto glass is notorious for impeding and deflecting handgun rounds but will rarely stop them.

reflections image by Furan from Fotolia.com. If you are looking to improve your safety, you may want to bulletproof the windows in your car. However, you should know that the term "bulletproof" is somewhat misleading, because no window is completely bulletproof. The more appropriate term is "bullet-resistant." more

So there are two ways to look at this:

So, once again, most of us don’t have a solid monolithic half-inch or quarter-inch piece of glass in our homes or buildings. It, therefore, seems deceiving to advertise a product as a ballistic-rated product when it requires that you replace your existing glass before adding multiple layers of a film to it. [links]

So the dry times for very thick films are a lot longer than a regular window film, and the sheer thickness can lead to problems with drying and clarity. If an installer is not used to installing this, it’s probably not going to go well, and the consistency over many windows, especially, is tough to obtain. here

Window films are made from a polyester mailer sheeting that can be coded in various ways to achieve solar-control properties, privacy, and other benefits in cars, homes, and buildings. But it can also be made in a variety of thicknesses for safety and security purposes. more

I think it’s easier to go out and buy a ballistic-rated laminated-type glass that is a finished product without all the hazards of dry times and clarity issues and install that rather than replacing the glass and then adding film.

Generally speaking, most of us don’t have ½ inch or 1-inch thick glass in our homes. We might have an IG (insulating glass) unit or two pieces of quarter-inch glass or eighth-inch glass consisting of an overall 1-inch thick unit. But that’s got a big air gap in the middle.
