Himes said the Unified Command is still working around the clock to remove the ship but their operation has significantly slowed down.

The oil is problematic because it can easily transfer on the bottom of people’s feet and put the wildlife in danger, Himes explained. Crews are working from sunrise to sunset quickly to remove the oil from the shoreline. here

Residents like Syrilla Deangelis who live on St. Simons Sound have been watching the process of the ship removal since it began.

The 656-foot ship became grounded in St. Simons Sound on Sept. 8, 2019, after departing the Port of Brunswick. At the time, the ship was holding 4,200 vehicles in cargo and 24 crew members were on board.

“We’re very concerned, when we see impacts like this. It’s fair to say this is what we would call a worst-case scenario. These are the kind of the scenarios that we plan for well in advanced before we start removing the ship and even when you have all the infrastructure and personnel in place you can still learn things about the environment,” Himes said. here

“It’s very crazy because my grandchildren come here, other people’s grandchildren come here, and I would hate to see that happen and them have to be playing in it,” Deangelis said. [links]

Crews in yellow protective suits have been working 12 hours a day trying to mitigate the effects of the oil, setting up thousands of feet of containment boom, spraying sphagnum moss, a peat absorbent on the grass to keep it from sticking to other surfaces and animals, and removing already dead, oiled marsh grass.

HURT: People in yellow suits are almost hip-deep, making their way through the tall, light-green marsh grass stained black. Crews like this one are working 12 hours a day, trying to mitigate the effects of the oil. Others are focused on pumping the roughly 300,000 gallons of fuel out of the ship's tanks. They've gotten more than 220,000 gallons off so far, but what's already spilled has become a big problem for fishermen like Scott Owens. [links]

HAYMANS: You know, you never want something like this to happen, but for what it is, we are very, very fortunate to this point. The amount of oil that we see that where it could be - you know, we're very fortunate.

Despite lots of effort, it's been leaking an unknown amount of fuel and oil, which has local environmental advocates and commercial fishermen concerned. Oil has been found in sheens in the water, in bits on some beaches and in the marsh itself, indicated by black stains on the spartina grass.

Did any of you people who made snarky posts criticizing the professor read any of the news articles about this? And do you have a shred of empathy or concern for other humans? more

This professor had retired in 2011 returned to teach part-time on a "retired - rehired" basis. On the first day of class, he posted on the board, "NO MASK, NO CLASS." He explained that due to age and underlying health conditions he could die if he contracted Covid. On the first day all students complied. On the second day, a new student entered the class who refused to put a mask over her nose. Rather than teach in a room with an unmasked and probably unvaccinated student, when Governor Kemp's policy does not allow the university to mandate either, he resigned. “At that point, I said that whereas I had risked my life to defend my country while in the Air Force, I was not willing to risk my life to teach a class with an unmasked student during this Pandemic,” Bernstein said in an email to The Red & Black. “I then resigned my retiree-rehire position.” Other students were shocked and angry at the unnamed mask-averse student because many of them are seniors who needed the class to graduate.
