Several islands within the sounds are predator-free sanctuaries for native wildlife. Motuara, Long, Blumine and Allports Islands are ideal for picnics, forest walks or viewing historic sites.

Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1770s, with explorer Captain Cook visiting the Sounds. He discovered a plant, later called “Cooks Scurvy Grass”, which was high in vitamin C and helped to cure scurvy among his crew.

I made this rec. early in the morning in the Marlborough Sound (New Zealand) in december. 2004,using an OKM II mic. an AIWA AM-F80 MD-Rec. You can hear the typical sound of bell-birds and tuis.

To truly get away from it all take a single or multi-day hike along the scenic Queen Charlotte Track. Or stay amongst the secluded bays in waterside accommodation, some only accessible by boat or helicopter. more
