Even with a small leak the engine may perform correctly. However, a large leak will affect the way the engine runs. If you ever see fuel trapped in this hose you have a bad fuel pump that needs replacing. And most importantly: Don't use your boat until it is corrected. more
Q: I keep my stern-drive-powered boat in a lake behind my house for a month or two at a time. When I look at the outdrive (the portion of the engine in the water), it looks pitted and almost as if it has a barnaclelike growth on it. What could this be? more
A: What you are seeing is referred to in marine maintenance as electrolysis, a process that describes the decomposition of an electrolyte by an electric current passing through it. more
If 50 percent of the anode is eaten away, it should be replaced because it will not have enough surface area to do its job. You may wish to have your marine mechanic check the outdrive to make sure none of the parts (including thepropeller) are electrically isolated. [links]
