Another noticeable characteristic between the Generation 1 & 2 sterndrives is the width of the mounting pads for the trim cylinders as shown in Figure 3. The Gen 2 drive has a substantially wider mounting dimension than the Gen 1. [links]
A very common question raised when replacing the Mercruiser Alpha sterndrives involves the gear ratio. NOTE: Mercruiser made the following gear ratio changes to the Alpha Model Sterndrives several years ago in effort to develop s stronger gear combination that would offer customers better overall Sterndrive durability. Be aware that these New Gear Ratios are a direct replacement for the older gear ratios. There is no noticeable difference in performance. more

Re: Correct prop for Mercruiser 5.7L here
Does the 14.25x21 prop throw any red flags for anyone else?
It does respond to trim height, with it down its glued to the water and up the bow is up. [links]
I have been looking at a Laser II 14x19.
You need to compare speed to engine rpm and try a few props before making a final decision. especially now because you have the availibility to use 4 and 5 blade props to determine you best performance curve. I recomend finding a dealer or prop shop with demo props to try out first.
Hey there, I've done a ton of research. And something is not adding up here. Your original prop was a 3 x 17" Going to the new 4 x 18" should have only cut your RPM's by 200-400RPM maximum. What you reported was an RPM drop from 4500 to 38-3900RPMs? YIKES. more

Re: Help with best Prop for Alpha 1 Gen 2
Took it out 2 times and at WOT his about 38mph and was in the mid 4k RPM ranges. It took for ever to plan off and at one point had to have a buddy sit up in the bow to get it to plane off. During this time didn't really pay too much attention to the RPM as I was already overwhelmed with being new to boating.
