I have tried all the suggested options. I follow the user manual to the letter with the starting procedures, but to no avail (unless the boat is out of the water connected up to the ear muffs).
As mentioned before, once it does fire up and clears itself out it is generally fine so it does seem to suggest some flooding/choking problem. Plugs, fuel lines & primer bulb have all been replaced. I guess it won't hurt to rekit the fuel pump - got nothing to lose. here

Dino,
Ask your service tech. if he/she performed a compression check on the motor. You may have a low compression situation.

Mr. Maxwell, have you checked the water level in your alternator? I knew a man that was having simular troubles and my Nephew suggested he check the water level in his alternator.
I'm pretty sure once the water level was properly adjusted the man's troubles were cured. [links]

The carbs might need thorough cleaning, immerse the unit in solvent and let sit for a day.

I’ve been reading other reviews and other Owners are saying they are going thru hubs too. I called Mercury and they said that I had to of hit something. I’m leaving this review as I want to let people see my experience and how this goes. I have about 58 hours on the engine. I will update my review soon when I figure this out. I also did buy the extended warranty for my Mercury. Which is suppose to be good for 8 years. Also when I shift gears on earmuffs with prop off. Everything sounds perfect. When I put the prop on it sounds clunky. I’m not sure if other Mercury owners can reply to me in here and tell me if they had the same issue and got it fixed. But so far not to bad if this is all I go thru. Some people have had it bad with their Mercury’s. [links]

Not sure if it would have caused permanent damage. I guess you could run a compression test to see if the valves and piston rings are still OK, or even send the old oil out for analysis to see if it has contaminants that might indicate something was damaged.

BTW, I dont think I would have tried to siphon out the excess oil. I would have just drained the oil out that was in there and done a complete new oil change, being sure the right amount of oil is added. The old oil is probably fine, but it might have been broken down somewhat (or have air or other contaminants trapped in it) by all the foaming and aeration from being over-filled. [links]
