The new oil is National Marine Manufacturers Association FC-W certified, and the 25W-40 blend can be used in any marine engine, including Verado outboards, except pre-2007 “Gen I” Verado motors. These particular engines should still be filled with Mercury 25W-50 synthetic Verado oil. I was told that this is because Mercury simply doesn’t have a Gen I Verado available to use for oil testing, and thus can’t yet certify the new oil for those motors. These three oils replace six different bottles that used to line a Mercury dealer’s shelves. more

Mercury's new motor lube lineup is made up of three different types of oil, including semi-synthetic and conventional.

Mercury says the mineral 25W-40 oil is “good,” but the semi-synthetic is “best” and offered additional shear protection at the most demanding conditions. If you run hard, the semi-synthetic is the way to go. Both oils are superior to any Mercury has offered previously.

If you own a Mercury motor and change your own oil, here’s a handy idea that will make maintenance easier: Mercury has developed four new and convenient oil change kits that contain all the components needed to change the oil in a Mercury outboard engine. So instead of standing at the parts counter to collect the right oil, filter, and drain plug gasket, you can just grab a box off the shelf and get to work. It’s like a Happy Meal for the DIY outboard owners. Each kit includes: Mercury 25W-40 marine engine oil, a Mercury oil filter, a drain plug seal, a drip tray (if required), and complete instructions printed right on the box. [links]

1) How can that happen? It's been in the shop once, maybe someone overfilled it, but I seriously doubt it. How can I wind up with MORE OIL than I poured in?

I've seen in the manual and heard several times DO NOT OVERFILL the crankcase with engine oil. Well, the last time I changed the oil, I found it to be a bit overfilled before I began. So I was careful not to overfill it myself. Now, a few months later, I'm trying to get ready for a vacation trip to the FL Keys, and the crankcase is severely overfilled.

Price Reduced to $6,900!
I am selling my aluminum 1999 Crestliner 1750 Sportfish with 90HP Mercury boat. I bought it brand new and it was well kept. The boat was sitting on my boat lift and the lake rose 14” overnight. It floated off the lift and sustained the following damage in the storm. The drivers windshield glass was broken, frame is still in good shape. Passenger window and middle window are installed now and in good shape. The starboard side of the boat sustained scratches and a few minor dents. The port side sustained a couple minor dents and scratches. The back sustained a few scratches. The 90HP Mercury motor has scratches on the motor cover. The boat was in excellent condition and was valued at $12,000 prior to the storm.

Harley-Davidson tried to void warranties if you used AmsOil. An independent testing company proved Amsoil was better than the HD oil, Then HD changed their toon. Amsoil is now making marine oil. Love the stuff. Search for their test results and you might think of trying it.

If I am not mistaken the Amsoil product is actually a little more expensive than the merc oil.

To me it is not the ten dollars. It is that I feel like Mercury has scared me into having to use their product or there could be failures. So it is never a feel good when I purchase that mercury oil. It is if i don't I could have problems feeling. Same with the fuel additives #1 #2 #3. Never felt like that was a good way to market a product. Guess I could also look at it as they are good enough to let me know that they have made the fluids that work well with their motors. here
