Let's see if I've been taught Anything here at iboats.
10%HP x US Gallon at WOT
A 50 will travel at around 26-28 Knots ph which will take @5 gallons to travel 27 nautical miles.
4.5 gallons per hr is pretty close.
Roscoe. You're a good 'ol boy..

LOL. I won't blame you if run out. Yep it's a 2 stroke. I think Ill be just fine, I did a little math and I figure that based on 10 gallons I should get about 80 miles (that's with not much if any reserve)if I cruise about 25 mph. My boat cruises happily at 25 mph. Although I'm taking a friend that isn't exactly a small fella. Together we go aboout 520 lbs. The boat limit says 600 on the coast guard sticker or 880 with motor people and gear. I think the motor weighs in at 200 lbs. [links]

Approx 4.5 gallons per hour at full throttle.
Maybe 3 per hour at 3000 rpm.

Best to test it out to be sure, and carry an extra gallon or two to be safe. Or an extra 6 gallon portable tank if you need to extend the range.

OMO

Cool thanks, I just wanted some kind of idea of what to expect. I've never really calculate it while out on the lake. Always too busy fishing..lol

I have a 40 hp Evinrude that is not too far removed from the 50 hp Johnson you have (2 cycle, right?). On a 14" runabout that weighs about 1000 lbs without fuel, people or gear, I can get between 2 -3 gallons an hour depending on how heavy I lean on the throttle.

One day I just idled (800-900rpm) my way around a lake looking at all the water front houses with 4 adults. Only burned 1 gallon in 1 1/2 hours.

Your fuel consumption should be about the same as long as you don't run WOT.

Of course, if you run out of gas after using my usage as a guide, I will disavow any knowledge of this post.

Theres a formula for fuel consumption that works with any size marine engine "1/3 out 2/3 back"

Operating noise also has improved with the new technology outboards, though it’s generally accepted that the smooth-running 4-stroke is superior to the direct injection 2-stroke in this area. Offshore anglers can run 4-stroke outboards at 1,500 rpm all day and hear themselves talk, says Robin Senger, “The Outboard Professor” and director of marketing for Honda Marine, which builds 4-strokes from 2 hp to 225 hp. The closest rival on the 2-stroke side may be the Evinrude E-TEC 2-stroke outboards from BRP — formerly Bombardier Recreational Products — which are said to run as quietly as a 4-stroke. more

In addition to quiet operation, BRP says E-TEC engines release less soot and particulate matter than 4-strokes, and emit lower carbon monoxide levels, an emission component not currently regulated with marine engines in the United States. more

Suzuki uses hollow camshafts and plastic exhaust manifolds in its 4-stroke outboards, says David Greenwood, senior product development engineer for American Suzuki Motor Corp. Many of these new parts used in Suzuki outboards perform at 14,000 rpm on the company’s motorcycles, he adds.

4-stroke has a distinct fuel economy advantage at middle rpm (2,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm), he says. more

It’s also the perfect option for boaters choosing to repower their boats, especially older models with transoms not designed to accommodate the weight of conventional four-strokes. Mercury’s new outboard is by far the lightest 150 hp engine, weighing just 11 kgs more than the popular Mercury OptiMax 150 direct-injected two-stroke. With almost 20% fewer parts than a Yamaha F150, the Mercury 150 FourStroke proves that technology can be used equally well to deliver durability and performance while simultaneously reducing package size and weight. “The new Mercury 150 is class-leading in every respect but we particularly focused our attention on being a stand-out in the areas that our customers told us really matter to them; quality and reliability; smooth operation; a great torque curve; low weight and compact size; excellent fuel economy and easy maintenance,” said David Foulkes, vice president of engineering at Mercury. “We started our engineering efforts by listening hard to our customers, and then we executed the most effective possible design to meet their needs. “ [links]

Despite the naturally aspirated engine’s remarkable small size and low weight, the new 150 hp outboard by Mercury boasts a 3.0-liter, four-cylinder in-line configuration that easily creates superior power for single or twin applications – from the lightest flat skiffs to the largest saltwater offshore hulls. In fact, it has more displacement than any other 150 hp four-stroke engine, yet it delivers fuel efficiency at cruising speed that no other engine can beat.

The tournament-tested Mercury ProXS lineup is the choice of thousands of performance-minded anglers. Only OptiMax ProXS engines feature durable and responsive Carbon Fiber Reeds to control airflow into the engine crankcase, while dome-Shaped Piston Heads direct the fuel-and-air charge to the spark plug more efficiently. This results in amazing power, outstanding durability, and excellent running quality. In head-to-head tests, the 150hp ProXS outran the competition by almost 5 MPH - while delivering 15% better fuel economy. In addition, we outfitted the 250hp ProXS with Solid Billet Aluminum Mounts to keep the engine from turning or twisting under high torque (20-inch models only). here
